Mumbai's Malad Flyover Nears Completion: Full Operations Expected By This Month
Mumbai's Malad area is set to get major traffic relief as the new T-shaped flyover is likely to become fully operational by the first week of January, as per the Indian Express report. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) successfully completed the launch of all girders for the flyover early Friday morning, paving the way for the final phase of construction.
At present, the flyover at Mith Chowky is partially open and serves only vehicles moving from east to west. Once fully operational, it will also accommodate southbound traffic, easing congestion in the area. An official stated, "The final girder launch was completed overnight between Thursday (14 November) and Friday (15 November). Now, we will proceed with laying asphalt roads and waterproofing, which will take over a month. We aim to open the flyover for all traffic by early January."
The flyover starts near the Girdhar Park Bridge, spans above the Malad Creek, and crosses the busy Mith Chowky traffic junction. The eastern end of the flyover is located near St Joseph's School, allowing vehicles to head towards Malad station and the Western Express Highway (WEH). The southbound arm will connect to Link Road, providing a direct route for motorists travelling towards Andheri, Juhu, and the airport.
Due to the elevated north-south Mumbai Metro 2-A line running above this flyover, it is designed to accommodate only two-wheelers and light motor vehicles. Buses and heavy vehicles will not be permitted.
Originally proposed in 2014, the flyover project was delayed due to the metro line construction and uncertainty about the height of the metro bridges. The BMC waited for the metro line to become operational before starting work on this flyover, which is expected to ease traffic in one of Mumbai's busiest areas.
