Mumbai Local Train Services Update: Heavy Rainfall Causes Disruptions; Check Reschedule And Cancellations
Mumbai's local trains are a lifeline for college students, blue-collar workers, entrepreneurs, and thousands of other citizens. The network operates on three lines: the Western Line, Central Line, and Harbour Line, managed by the Central Railway.
Western Line

The Western Line, one of India's most important railway routes, connects Mumbai with its suburbs and other cities in Maharashtra. Running from Churchgate to Dahanu Road, it starts at 04:15 AM and includes 39 stations, featuring iconic landmarks. Fast trains typically stop at Mumbai Central, Dadar, Bandra, Andheri, and Borivali. From 5:24 PM to 8:21 PM, fast trains in the Up direction skip stations between Mumbai Central and Churchgate, and in the Down direction, they bypass these stations from 07:30 AM to 10:57 AM.
Central Line
The Central Line runs through the heart of Mumbai and its suburbs. The main route is Y-shaped, beginning at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and splitting at Kalyan towards Kasara and Khopoli. From Diva, the line extends to Vasai Road and Panvel, with an additional branch from Thane towards Uran City. There are 62 stations on this line, with services starting at 04:00 AM. Trains depart from terminal stations and major stops like Dadar and Kalyan every few minutes. The line features slow trains, which stop at all stations, and fast trains, which only halt at major stations. A fast train from CSMT to Kalyan takes about 1 hour and 12 minutes, while a slow train takes around 1 hour and 27 minutes.
Harbour Line
The Harbour Line serves Mumbai's eastern neighbourhoods along its natural harbour, with 35 stations in total. Services run from 04:00 AM to 01:00 AM. The line has three termini: CSMT, Panvel, and Goregaon, and runs on the Panvel-Goregaon, CSMT-Goregaon, and CSMT-Panvel routes. Starting from CSMT, the Harbour Line splits at Ravli, with one branch ending at Goregaon and another splitting at Navi Mumbai to Thane and Panvel.
Mumbai Rains Disrupts Local Train Services
The Central Railway (CR) experienced its first significant monsoon rail disruption this Sunday, resulting in several long-distance trains being diverted, rescheduled, or short-terminated. This was due to severe waterlogging and heavy rains between the Kalyan-Kasara stations.
The CR restored local train services between Kalyan and Kasara stations with restricted speed following a disruption caused by heavy rainfall late on Sunday.
In a social media post on platform X, formerly Twitter, the CR stated, "The services have been restored between Kalyan and Kasara with restricted speed. The disruption was primarily because of heavy rains. We deeply regret the inconvenience caused."
In another update, the CR noted that the "Mega block" between DIVA and Thane stations is over. The trains heading to and from Mumbai that are cancelled today include train numbers 11009, 12123, 11008, and 12128.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Maharashtra today. The Railway authorities cancelled the following trains on July 8 due to waterlogging at Mumbai stations and IMD's alert for more showers:
12110 (MMR-CSMT) JCO
11010 (PUNE-CSMT) JCO
12124 (PUNE CSMT DECCAN) JCO
11007 (PUNE-CSMT DECCAN) JCO
12127 (CSMT-PUNE INTERCITY EXP) JCO
Ongoing heavy showers in Mumbai have disrupted local train services, causing difficulties for office-goers. Footage from Dombivli Railway Station shows worried commuters amid the heavy downpour. Video footage from Mumbai also shows waterlogged streets and roads, disrupting daily life.
Western Railway, in a post on X, stated, "Mumbai Suburban trains are running up to 10 mins late because water is above track level between Matunga Rd and Dadar due to heavy rains." The post further mentioned, "High capacity water pumps are being utilised to drain waters away from the railway tracks to ensure a smooth commute for Mumbaikars."
Central Railway, in a post on X, stated, "Train services on the Main line are running; however, due to heavy rains and waterlogging between Bhandup and Nahur, trains are being run by clamping and padlocking the points. Clamping completed at 06:45."
The Central Railway noted that at Bhandup station, train services halted at around 5:15 am. "At 6:40 am, services for slow local trains were restored. Fast local trains are still halted, but we will restore them soon," reported CNBC-TV18.
Vistara Airlines warned passengers of heavy traffic congestion due to the heavy downpour. In a post on X, Vistara Airlines stated, "Heavy traffic congestion and slow vehicle movement are expected en route to Mumbai Airport today due to weather conditions."
On Sunday, many local trains running between Kalyan and Kasara stations were rescheduled due to waterlogging following heavy rains.
Local train services in Maharashtra's Thane district, adjoining Mumbai, were suspended on the morning of July 7, a day after heavy rainfall rendered the tracks unsafe. The train services were affected between Kasara and Titwala stations, according to officials.
Railway officials informed that soil had come onto the tracks between Atgaon and Transit stations due to heavy rains at around 6:30 am. Additionally, a tree fell, blocking the tracks near Vashind station. This disrupted rail traffic on the Kalyan-Kasara route.
"Train services between Kasara and Titwala have been suspended temporarily," a Central Railway spokesperson told PTI. Another railway official informed news agency PTI that an overhead equipment pole tilted, causing the pantograph of the Mumbai-bound Punjab Mail train to become entangled near Vashind.
Trains were diverted via the Kalyan-Lonavala-Pune-Miraj-Londa-Madgaon route due to waterlogging on tracks between Vashind and Khadavli stations. This resulted in the diversion of long-distance trains and the termination of short-distance trains.
