Mumbai Local Train Services Update: Ghatkopar Station Gets New Escalator, Major Upgrades Underway

A new escalator was inaugurated on platform number four at Ghatkopar railway station on Saturday, marking the completion of the first phase of the station's upgrade project, according to the Hindustan Times (HT) report. Ghatkopar is one of 17 railway stations in Mumbai being refurbished by the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC). The second phase of the project is expected to be finished by the end of 2027.

Ghatkopar station is a vital transit point, linking Central Railway's main line with the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro 1 corridor. The station often experiences overcrowding during peak hours, with queues spilling onto the 12-metre-wide foot overbridge that serves both rail and metro commuters.

"In phase one, we installed six escalators, including the most recent one on platform four," an MRVC official stated in the HT report.

The first phase also introduced a new 12-metre-wide and 75-metre-long foot overbridge, a deck with a booking office on the eastern side measuring 15 by 45 metres, and a FOB with exits on platforms 2, 3, and 4.

Details Of Phase Two

The second phase of the project, now underway, involves constructing two 12-metre-wide and 75-metre-long foot overbridges at either end of the station-Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Kalyan. Additionally, a 300-metre-long, 8-metre-wide elevated deck will be built above platform 1 on the western side. Plans also include six staircases, seven escalators, and three lifts.

A four-metre-wide skywalk will connect platform 4 to the northern foot overbridge. The second phase also includes service buildings for the Government Railway Police and a two-storey structure on the east side for ticket counters and offices.

MRVC is currently procuring steel girders for the new FOBs and has cleared the site for the elevated deck on the west side. Demolition of the existing booking office at the north end is in progress to make way for the new FOB.

"Phase two is expected to be completed by March 2027," said the MRVC official in the same report.

Enhanced Facilities For Commuters

Subhash Chand Gupta, Chairperson and Managing Director of MRVC, highlighted the importance of the project in addressing passengers' growing needs. "These upgrades will offer better facilities, ease crowding, and improve safety," he said in the HT report.

Additional amenities nearing completion include a two-wheeler parking area beneath the eastern deck and a new façade on the east side of the station.
