Mumbai Local Train Services Update: Bandra Bridge Work Ends This Weekend, Services Normal On Ambedkar Jayanti
According to a mid-day report, the Western Railway has announced that the crucial phase of reconstruction work on Bridge No. 20 between Mahim and Bandra is expected to conclude this weekend. This development comes after significant disruptions to local train services on Saturday, causing inconvenience to commuters.
The bridge, originally built in 1888 over the Mithi River, is being upgraded to replace its outdated screw-pile foundations with modern raft foundations. This upgrade is essential to ensure the safety and reliability of train operations. The reconstruction work has been ongoing since January and is scheduled for completion before the onset of the monsoon in May.
On Saturday, approximately 270 local train services were cancelled, and an additional 150 were partially curtailed due to the ongoing work. This led to overcrowding at major stations like Bandra and Masjid Bunder.
In response to the disruptions, Mumbai North Central Member of Parliament Varsha Gaikwad urged the suspension of the work, highlighting that lakhs of followers of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar travel to Chaityabhoomi in Dadar to pay homage on his birth anniversary, which falls on Monday. She emphasized that the train cancellations would cause significant inconvenience to these devotees.
Addressing these concerns, Western Railway's Chief Public Relations Officer Vineet Abhishek stated, "The block is coming to an end on Sunday morning, and things would be normal on Monday when no train service will get affected."
Commuters can thus expect regular train services to resume from Monday, ensuring smooth travel for those visiting Chaityabhoomi and other destinations.
