Mumbai Lakes Water Levels Surge To 98.61 Per Cent Capacity, Promising Steady Water Flow

Mumbai's seven lakes, which supply drinking water to the city, have reached 98.61 per cent of their total capacity, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The water stock in these reservoirs now stands at 14,27,276 million litres, ensuring a stable drinking water supply for the city in the upcoming months.

Mumbai draws its water from seven key lakes: Tulsi, Tansa, Vihar, Bhatsa, Modak Sagar, Upper Vaitarna, and Middle Vaitarna. According to the latest data, Modak Sagar is at 98.70 per cent of its capacity, while Tansa stands at 97.80 per cent. Vihar Lake has reached full capacity at 100 per cent, and the remaining lakes are close to filling up as well. Middle Vaitarna is at 98.38 per cent, Upper Vaitarna at 99.15 per cent, Bhatsa at 98.58 per cent, and Tulsi at 99.87 per cent.

Heavy rainfall in July played a crucial role in filling these reservoirs. Middle Vaitarna began overflowing on July 4 due to severe rains, followed by Vihar and Modak Sagar lakes, which overflowed by July 25. Tansa Lake began overflowing on July 24, significantly contributing to the city's water supply.

Tansa Lake, located in the Shahpur region of Thane, supplies approximately 400 million gallons of water to Mumbai daily. Meanwhile, Tulsi Lake, one of the two lakes that directly supply water to the BMC, also overflowed on July 20, echoing a similar overflow last year.

With the lakes nearly full, Mumbai's water supply remains secure, offering a positive outlook for the city's drinking water needs in the months ahead.
