Mumbai Lakes Water Levels Surge To 35.02 Per Cent Capacity, BMC Confirms Over 5 Lakh ML Stored

The water storage in Mumbai's seven lakes, which supply the city with drinking water, reached 35.02% of their total capacity by 6:00 am on June 25, 2025. This is a significant increase from the 5.29% recorded on the same date last year, according to the Hydraulic Engineer's Department of BMC.

Recent rainfall has significantly replenished these crucial reservoirs. Currently, they hold 5,06,890 million litres (ML) of water out of a total capacity of 14,47,363 ML. On this day last year, only 76,602 ML was stored in these lakes.

Water Levels Rise in Key Lakes

Among the seven lakes, Middle Vaitarna experienced the most substantial rise in water level over the past day. It increased by 1.47 meters and now contains 1,93,530 ML or 39.09% of its capacity. Modak Sagar also saw a notable increase of 0.56 meters, reaching 69,978 ML or 54.28% of its total capacity.

Tansa Lake recorded a modest rise of 0.25 meters and currently holds 56,302 ML (38.81%). Upper Vaitarna rose slightly by 0.09 meters and now stores 91,185 ML (40.16%). The combined useful content for Upper Vaitarna system lakes stands at 2,88,061 ML or about 41.47% of their total capacity.

Rainfall Impact on Other Reservoirs

The Bhatsa reservoir within the Vihar–Tulsi–Bhatsa group saw a rise of 0.90 meters and now holds 2,04,076 ML (28.46%). Tulsi recorded a smaller increase of just 0.06 meters and currently contains 3,216 ML (39.95%). Meanwhile, Vihar remains low with only 11,588 ML or about 41.73% of its full capacity.

The Bhandup Complex received an additional rainfall of 8 mm in the last day alone, bringing its seasonal total to an impressive 441 mm so far this year.

Weather Forecast for Mumbai

Mumbai is expected to experience more rain in the coming days as per forecasts from IMD. Heavy rains are predicted for both Mumbai and Konkan regions under cloudy skies today; hence a yellow alert has been issued by weather authorities.
