Mumbai Lakes Water Level Today: Major Reservoirs Reach Near-Capacity Levels After Recent Downpours
Mumbai lakes, which are crucial for the city's drinking supply, are currently at 93.17 per cent of their capacity, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data released on Monday. This reflects a significant water stock of 13,48,520 million litres across the seven main lakes serving the city.
The seven reservoirs include Tulsi, Tansa, Vihar, Bhatsa, Modak Sagar, Upper Vaitarna, and Middle Vaitarna. The water levels in these lakes are as follows:

Tansa Lake: 97.07 per cent
Modak Sagar Lake: 94.88 per cent
Middle Vaitarna Lake: 97.64 per cent
Upper Vaitarna Lake: 90.85 per cent
Bhatsa Lake: 91.28 per cent
Vihar Lake: 100 per cent
Tulsi Lake: 98.74 per cent
Recent heavy rains have led to significant changes in the water levels. Middle Vaitarna Lake began overflowing on July 4. Following this, Vihar and Modak Sagar Lakes started overflowing on July 25 due to continued rainfall.
On July 24, around 4 pm, Tansa Lake also started to overflow, leading to a substantial increase in water levels across all reservoirs by an estimated 17 days' worth of water in just one day.
Tansa Lake, located in Shahpur, Thane, contributes approximately 400 million gallons of water to Mumbai and overflowed on July 26, 2024. Tulsi Lake, one of the two lakes directly supplying water to the BMC, began overflowing on July 20 at 8:30 am, similar to the previous year's overflow timing.
In addition to these developments, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rainfall for Mumbai today. The city is expected to experience a partly cloudy sky with potential spells of rain and thunderstorms over the next 24 hours. Temperatures are predicted to reach a maximum of 34 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 26 degrees Celsius.
The BMC also reports that Mumbai will experience a high tide of approximately 4.10 metres at 11:50 pm. Additionally, a low tide of about 1.37 metres is expected at 5:50 pm.
Residents are advised to stay informed about weather updates and prepare for the potential impacts of these high and low tides.
