Mumbai Lakes Water Level Today: City’s Water Supply Secured As Reservoirs Hit 97.75 Per Cent Capacity
Water levels in Mumbai's seven key reservoirs, which supply the city with drinking water, have reached 97.75 per cent of their total capacity, according to data released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Sunday.
The lakes currently hold 14,14,824 million litres of water, nearing their full storage capacity. Mumbai sources its water from Tulsi, Tansa, Vihar, Bhatsa, Modak Sagar, Upper Vaitarna, and Middle Vaitarna reservoirs.
Tansa Lake is at 98.29 per cent capacity, while Modak Sagar has already reached 100 per cent. Middle Vaitarna is at 97.81 per cent, Upper Vaitarna is at 97.45 per cent, Bhatsa stands at 97.21 per cent, and both Vihar and Tulsi are at full capacity, each at 100 per cent.
These rising water levels have been attributed to the heavy rainfall over the past few months. On July 4, Middle Vaitarna Lake started overflowing due to continuous rain. Vihar and Modak Sagar lakes began overflowing on July 25, followed by Tansa Lake on July 24, significantly boosting Mumbai's water reserves.
Tansa Lake, located in the Shahpur region of Thane, supplies around 400 million gallons of water daily to Mumbai. It began overflowing on July 26, marking a crucial increase in water availability for the city.
Tulsi Lake, one of the two lakes directly feeding water to the BMC, started overflowing on July 20 at 8:30 am. Interestingly, this occurred almost at the same time as last year, when it overflowed on July 20 at 1:28 pm, according to the civic body.
With these water levels, Mumbai is well-positioned to have a steady supply of drinking water in the coming months, providing relief to residents amid the monsoon season. The situation highlights the importance of heavy rainfall in replenishing the city's water supply.
