Mumbai Lakes Water Level Nearly Full: Reach 96.84 Per Cent As Rains Boost Reservoirs

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has reported that the water levels in Mumbai's seven reservoirs, which provide the city with its drinking water, have reached 96.84 per cent of their total capacity. This update was shared by the BMC on Sunday, September 1, through a tweet on X, formerly known as Tweeter.

According to the BMC's data, the collective water stock in these lakes now stands at 14,47,363 million litres, accounting for 96.84 per cent of the total useful water content. The lakes supplying water to Mumbai include Tulsi, Tansa, Vihar, Bhatsa, Modak Sagar, Upper Vaitarna, and Middle Vaitarna.

Breaking down the figures, the water level in Tansa Lake is currently at 98.29 per cent, while Modak Sagar has 99.54 per cent of its water stock available. Middle Vaitarna's useful water content is 98.86 per cent, Upper Vaitarna stands at 96.81 per cent, and Bhatsa has 95.37 per cent. Notably, Vihar and Tulsi lakes have reached 100 per cent of their useful water levels.

These high water levels have been bolstered by the heavy rains Mumbai has experienced in recent weeks. Middle Vaitarna Lake began overflowing on July 4, followed by Vihar and Modak Sagar, which started overflowing on July 25.

Tansa Lake began to overflow on July 24 at around 4 pm, which significantly increased the water stock in all seven reservoirs, adding 17 days' worth of water in just one day. Tansa Lake, located in the Shahpur region of Thane, supplies approximately 400 million gallons of water to Mumbai and overflowed again on July 26.

Tulsi Lake, one of the two lakes that directly supply water to the BMC, also started overflowing on July 20 at around 8:30 am, mirroring the overflow that occurred last year on the same date at 1:28 pm.
