Mumbai Lakes Water Level Hits 98.71 Per Cent—How Long Will The City’s Supply Last?

Mumbai's drinking water supply is now secure, with water levels in the city's seven reservoirs reaching 98.71 per cent of their total capacity. This was confirmed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday morning, ensuring the city will have ample water for its needs in the coming months.

As per the latest BMC data, the lakes collectively hold 14,28,697 million litres of water, which is nearly full. These reservoirs include Tulsi, Tansa, Vihar, Bhatsa, Modak Sagar, Upper Vaitarna, and Middle Vaitarna, all of which supply water to Mumbai.

Mumbai Lakes Water Level

The water levels in each lake are as follows: Modak Sagar, Vihar, and Tulsi have reached 100 per cent capacity. Middle Vaitarna stands at 99.20 per cent, Upper Vaitarna at 98.51 per cent, Bhatsa at 98.43 per cent, and Tansa at 98.29 per cent.

The heavy rains that have lashed Mumbai and its surrounding areas in recent months have significantly boosted the water levels. Middle Vaitarna, one of the key lakes, began overflowing on July 4, while Vihar and Modak Sagar lakes started flooding on July 25 due to continuous rainfall. Tansa Lake also overflowed on July 24, resulting in a sharp increase in the total water storage.

Tansa Lake, located in the Shahpur region of Thane, contributes approximately 400 million gallons of water daily to the city's supply. Tulsi Lake, one of the two lakes that directly supply water to the BMC, started overflowing on July 20, closely mirroring last year's overflow on the same date.

With these near-full levels, Mumbai's drinking water supply is expected to remain secure for the foreseeable future, easing concerns of any immediate water shortages.

Mumbai Weather Update

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted light spells of rain in Mumbai on Monday, according to the latest weather update. The IMD stated that the city and its suburbs could experience a "partly cloudy sky with the possibility of light rain" over the next 24 hours.

The temperature in Mumbai is expected to remain moderate, with the maximum temperature likely to settle at 31 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature is expected to be around 24 degrees Celsius. This temperature range will provide some relief from the heat for residents, especially with the forecast of light rainfall.

In addition to the weather forecast, the BMC has issued updates on the tidal movements for the day. A high tide of approximately 3.99 metres is expected to hit Mumbai at 10:50 pm, while a low tide of about 1.32 metres is expected at 4:44 pm. These tidal changes could affect the city's coastal areas, and residents near the shoreline are advised to stay cautious, especially during the high tide.
