Mumbai Lakes Water Level At 98.02 Per Cent: BMC Issues New Water Storage Report

Water levels in Mumbai's seven reservoirs, which supply drinking water to the city, have reached 98.02 per cent of their total capacity, according to data released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday. These reservoirs are crucial for providing water to Mumbai's millions of residents.

As per BMC reports, the collective water stock across all the lakes stands at 14,18,776 million litres. This includes water from the seven key lakes: Tulsi, Tansa, Vihar, Bhatsa, Modak Sagar, Upper Vaitarna, and Middle Vaitarna.

The data also reveals the current water levels in each lake. Tansa Lake is at 98.24 per cent of its full capacity, while Modak Sagar, Vihar, and Tulsi lakes are all at 100 per cent. Middle Vaitarna stands at 97.54 per cent, Upper Vaitarna at 98.30 per cent, and Bhatsa at 97.63 per cent.

Mumbai has witnessed heavy rainfall this monsoon season, leading to an overflow in several lakes. Middle Vaitarna Lake started overflowing on July 4 due to consistent rains. Vihar and Modak Sagar followed, flooding on July 25. Tansa Lake also overflowed on July 24 at around 4 pm, adding a significant amount of water to Mumbai's reserves, equating to an extra 17 days of supply in a single day.

Tansa Lake, located in Thane's Shahpur region, supplies approximately 400 million gallons of water to the city. It last overflowed on July 26. Meanwhile, Tulsi Lake, one of the two lakes directly providing water to the BMC, began overflowing on July 20 at 8:30 am, nearly matching the event from last year, which occurred at 1:28 pm on the same date.

In terms of the weather, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate spells of rain in Mumbai for Monday. A yellow alert has been issued for Thane and Palghar districts, indicating the likelihood of continued rainfall.

The IMD has predicted a "partly cloudy sky with the possibility of occasional moderate spells of rain" for Mumbai and its suburbs in the next 24 hours. Temperatures are expected to range between 26 and 31 degrees Celsius. Additionally, a high tide of about 3.54 metres is expected at 2:55 pm, with a low tide of 1.11 metres at 8:54 pm, as per BMC's latest updates.
