Mumbai Lakes Overflowing: Water Levels Soar To 98.15 Per Cent Capacity Amid Heavy Rains
On Tuesday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported that the water levels in Mumbai's seven key reservoirs have reached 98.15 per cent of their total capacity. This significant update is crucial for the city's water supply, as these reservoirs are the primary source of drinking water for Mumbai's residents.
According to the latest data from the BMC, the total water stock across the Mumbai lakes stands at 14,20,579 million litres. This represents 98.15 per cent of the reservoirs' combined capacity. The reservoirs supplying Mumbai include Tulsi, Tansa, Vihar, Bhatsa, Modak Sagar, Upper Vaitarna, and Middle Vaitarna.

The individual water levels in these lakes are as follows:
- Tansa Lake: 99.18 per cent full
- Modak Sagar: 99.99 per cent full
- Middle Vaitarna: 97.74 per cent full
- Upper Vaitarna: 98.51 per cent full
- Bhatsa: 97.51 per cent full
- Vihar: 100 per cent full
- Tulsi: 100 per cent full
In recent weeks, the water levels in these reservoirs have been significantly impacted by heavy rainfall. Notably, the Middle Vaitarna Lake began overflowing on July 4. Following this, Lakes Vihar and Modak Sagar also started to overflow on July 25. On July 24, at approximately 4 pm, Tansa Lake began overflowing, which contributed to a substantial increase in the water levels of all seven reservoirs, extending their supply duration by 17 days in a single day.
Tansa Lake, located in the Shahpur region of Thane, plays a vital role in Mumbai's water supply, contributing around 400 million gallons of water daily. It overflowed on July 26, 2024. Tulsi Lake, another critical source directly feeding the BMC, started overflowing on July 20 at approximately 8:30 am, a recurrence of a similar event from the previous year.
Mumbai Weather Update
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted moderate rainfall for Mumbai on Tuesday. The latest weather update indicates that the city will experience a partly cloudy sky with occasional moderate spells of rain in both the city and its suburbs over the next 24 hours.
The maximum temperature in Mumbai is expected to reach 31 degrees Celsius, while the minimum will be around 27 degrees Celsius.
Additionally, the BMC has alerted residents to a high tide of approximately 3.30 metres expected to hit Mumbai at 3:23 pm today. A low tide of about 1.31 metres is anticipated at 9:34 pm.
