Mumbai Lakes Overflow: City’s Water Reservoirs At 89 Per Cent Capacity Amid Heavy Rains

Mumbai's water reservoirs are currently at 89 per cent capacity, according to recent data from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). This increase in water levels follows a week of light to moderate rainfall in both the city and its catchment areas.

As of Sunday, the combined water stock in Mumbai's seven key lakes stands at 12,89,615 million litres, which equates to 89.10 per cent of total capacity. These lakes, which supply the city's drinking water, include Tulsi, Tansa, Vihar, Bhatsa, Modak Sagar, Upper Vaitarna, and Middle Vaitarna.

The BMC data reveals the following levels in the individual lakes:

Tansa Lake: 99.30 per cent
Modak Sagar: 100 per cent
Middle Vaitarna: 99.38 per cent
Upper Vaitarna: 66.81 per cent
Bhatsa: 89.09 per cent
Vihar: 100 per cent
Tulsi: 100 per cent

Notably, Lakes Vihar and Modak Sagar began to overflow on July 25 due to continuous heavy rains. Tansa Lake, located in the Shahpur region of Thane, started overflowing on July 24 at approximately 4 pm, contributing an additional 17 days' worth of water storage to the reservoirs in just one day.

Tulsi Lake, which is one of the two lakes directly supplying water to the BMC, began overflowing at 8:30 am on July 20, a year to the day after it overflowed at 1:28 pm the previous year.
