Mumbai Heatwave: Doctors Warn Of Rising Cases Of Dry Eyes, Redness & Other Problems; Prevention Tips Inside
With temperatures soaring, eye specialists in Mumbai are urging people to take extra care of their eyes. They warn of dry eye syndrome, redness, conjunctivitis, and other allergies, especially for those with health conditions like hypertension and diabetes or those undergoing treatment for macular degeneration. Experts say reducing screen time and mobile phone usage can help ease eye strain.
Heat Impact On Eyes
According to a Midday report, Dr Anand Subramanyam, a retina specialist from Matunga, stated that rising temperatures affect all living beings, including animals and birds. "With the heat wave warning issued by the BMC and meteorological department, I am seeing more elderly patients with dry eyes, redness, and sub-conjunctival haemorrhage (S-CH). Many also suffer from age-related macular degeneration," he said.

Explaining S-CH, he said, "It happens when small blood vessels under the conjunctiva break due to pressure, often affecting elderly patients with macular degeneration. It is more common in those with hypertension and diabetes."
Preventive Measures
As per the same report, Dr Anand advised, "Avoid direct sunlight, especially from 11 am to 4 pm. Wear UV protection sunglasses, cover your head, stay hydrated, and wash your face often. Avoid contact lenses and give your eyes proper rest."
Effects Of Heat And UV Exposure
Dr Karobi Lahiri Coutinho from Bombay Hospital noted, "Dehydration affects the eye, leading to dryness, irritation, pain, and vision problems. UV rays can cause corneal damage, cataracts, and macular degeneration. Heat and dust also reduce visibility, increasing accident risks."
Dr Charuta Mandke from Cooper Hospital added, "We are seeing more cases of dry eyes, redness, and irritation. People should consult an ophthalmologist and avoid over-the-counter eye drops."
Common Eye Issues Due To Heat
- Dry Eyes: Causes redness, watering, and irritation.
- Recurrent Stye: Often due to eye rubbing and infections.
- Cataract & Macular Degeneration: Common in the elderly, leading to vision problems.
Precautionary Tips
1. Stay hydrated (35 ml/kg of body weight).
2. Avoid outdoor exposure during peak heat hours.
3. Use sunscreen, UV sunglasses, and hats.
4. Use lubricant drops or gel as needed.
5. Follow the 20-20-20 rule for digital work.
6. Take short breaks, drink water, and use tear emollients.
7. Apply cold compresses for relief.
8. Wash your hands and face frequently.
Doctors warn that conjunctivitis cases may rise as summer progresses. Following these precautions can help protect eye health during extreme heat conditions.
