Mumbai Heatwave: BMC Issues Urgent Advisory To Prevent Heatstroke – Check Essential Dos And Don’ts

Days after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a heatwave warning for parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has stepped in with important guidelines to help the public cope with extreme heat conditions, as per the Mid-day report.

The IMD had predicted that temperatures in Mumbai and surrounding areas would exceed 40 degrees Celsius, with the heatwave expected to persist until March 11. The weather conditions are also expected to return in March and April.

In response, the BMC released an advisory on Monday, urging residents to take necessary precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses. One of the key recommendations is for those suffering from heatstroke to immediately move to a cooler, shaded area. Wiping the body and head with a damp cloth or washing with normal-temperature water can help lower body temperature.

The advisory also suggests drinking oral rehydration solution (ORS), lemon water, or any hydrating drink to replenish lost fluids. In severe cases of heatstroke, it is vital to seek medical help immediately, as heatstroke can be fatal.

The BMC's guidelines also provide a list of dos and don'ts to help people manage the heat:

Dos:

1. Drink plenty of water and carry it with you.
2. Wear light, loose, and breathable cotton clothing in soft, light colours.
3. Stay indoors if possible, or use protective gear such as an umbrella, cap, or sunglasses if you need to be outside.
4. Use wet cloths on the head, neck, face, and limbs to cool down.
5. Keep animals in the shade and ensure they have enough water.
6. Use curtains or sunshades to keep your home cool.

Don'ts:

1. Avoid alcohol, tea, coffee, and carbonated drinks, as they lead to dehydration.
2. Do not eat high-protein foods or stale food.
3. Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles.

By following these guidelines, residents can protect themselves and others from the dangers of extreme heat during this heatwave.
