Mumbai Goa Marine Superhighway: Eknath Shinde Launches Ambitious Project To Redefine Konkan Connectivity
After years of anticipation, the Marine Superhighway project, with a staggering budget of Rs 26,000 crore, is set to transform connectivity along the Konkan coast. According to a Times Of India report, this initiative aims to provide an alternative and scenic route to the current Goa highway, mirroring the iconic Pacific Highway in California. Stretching nearly 500 kilometres, the highway promises to ease congestion on the Mumbai-Goa route while enhancing access to coastal towns and attractions.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde recently initiated the groundbreaking ceremony for this long-awaited project, signalling a shift from planning to actual development. This move is expected to redefine road travel in the region, offering both a picturesque journey along the coast and the rugged terrain of the Sahyadri mountains. By doing so, it aims to facilitate smoother travel and bolster tourism in the area.

Engineering Marvels Along The Route
A significant feature of this coastal highway will be its seven bridges, which cumulatively span 27 kilometres across various creeks and rivers, facilitating uninterrupted travel and commerce. The Dharamtar Creek bridge in Karja, the largest among them, stretches over 10.2 kilometres and is a marvel of steel construction. This bridge exemplifies the project's commitment to advanced engineering and design.
Other noteworthy bridges include a 3.8-kilometre cable-stayed bridge over Kundlika Creek in Revdanda-Salav and another cable-stayed bridge of 4.3 kilometres over Agardanda Creek in Dighi Agardanda. Additionally, the route features a 1.7-kilometre bridge over Bankot Creek in Bagmandla Veshwi, a 670-meter bridge over Kelshi Bay in Kelshi designed with a "Box girder" configuration, a 4.4-kilometre bridge over Jaigad Creek, and a 1.6-kilometre bridge at Kunkeshwar. These bridges are integral to the highway's design, ensuring connectivity across natural water bodies.
Expansion And Development Challenges
The project entails expanding the existing two-lane road that runs parallel to the coast into a four-lane highway, connecting all sea cities of the Konkan. This ambitious undertaking, however, requires the acquisition of residential properties and forest areas, posing challenges in terms of land procurement and environmental impact. An official from the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) highlighted these concerns, emphasizing the need for careful planning and execution to minimize disruption.
