Mumbai Cable Car Project: Cutting Travel Time From Palghar To Mumbai Airport
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) is on the verge of a major shift in urban transportation, as the proposed cable car project has received in-principle approval from Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari.
The announcement came after a meeting of state transport ministers in New Delhi, where Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik presented the ambitious plan. The cable car system is designed to address the challenges posed by rapid urbanization and the growing pressure on MMR's public transportation network.

Stretching from Palghar to Uran-Pen in Raigad district, the aerial transport system aims to provide a sustainable, efficient alternative to traditional modes of transport, significantly reducing travel time between suburban areas and Mumbai Airport.
Minister Sarnaik confirmed that the project will be executed through a public-private partnership (PPP) or a joint financial collaboration between the central and state governments.
In response, Union Minister Gadkari instructed V Umashankar, Secretary of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, to conduct a thorough survey and prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to assess the project's feasibility, as reported by the Times of India.
Gadkari stressed the need for an integrated transportation system, underscoring the urgency of tackling congestion and pollution issues in the region. Sarnaik added that a comprehensive transport plan, which includes the cable car system along with other innovative solutions, is being developed for further evaluation.
"This initiative will revolutionize transportation in the MMR, addressing challenges like traffic congestion, pollution, and infrastructure gaps," Sarnaik stated, expressing optimism about the project's transformative impact on urban mobility.
The technical and financial feasibility survey is set to begin soon, with its findings to be included in the DPR. Once finalized, the cable car project could be the first step toward creating a modern, integrated transportation network for one of India's most densely populated regions.
