Mumbai Bridges Update: Gokhale, Carnac, And Vikhroli To Open Soon
Mumbai commuters can expect some relief as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has assured that construction work on the crucial Carnac, Vikhroli, and Gokhale bridges will be completed before the monsoon, according to a Hindustan Times (HT) report. Abhijeet Bangar, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects), confirmed on Monday that all these bridges would be opened for traffic by then.
As per the same report, BMC Chief and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani, along with Bangar, reviewed the progress of the bridges department on Monday. Bangar stressed the importance of better coordination and timely planning to ensure that the projects meet their deadlines. He highlighted the pending work at Sion Railway Station (East and West sides) and urged various departments to collaborate to resolve issues efficiently.

Bangar also acknowledged the growing frustration among citizens and stated that both the railway administration and the BMC needed to address concerns promptly. Regarding the Sion flyover, he directed officials to expedite the removal of obstructions on pedestrian bridges, close sewerage pipes, remove public toilets, shift BEST vehicles, and clear advertisement boards. He set a deadline for completing the Sion flyover by December 31, 2026.
For the Gopalkrishna Gokhale Bridge in Andheri, Bangar announced that the second phase of railway-related work had been completed. He assured that the BMC's limited approach road work would be finished by April 2025, making the entire bridge operational for traffic by April 30.
The construction of the Carnac Road Overbridge (ROB) is also progressing. The shifting of the 550-metric-tonne north arm girder is nearly complete. Bangar directed officials to accelerate the remaining work, aiming for completion by June 10, 2025, before the monsoon season.
Additionally, the construction of Belasis Bridge is scheduled to be completed by April 2026. However, Bangar urged efforts to open the bridge ahead of schedule, by December 2025. He noted that 12 structures obstructing the bridge's route had already been removed and instructed officials to remove the remaining 12 abandoned buildings immediately. He also ordered the relocation of commercial structures to appropriate rehabilitation sites.
For Vidyavihar Bridge, which serves as a key transport link, BMC plans to remove certain structures on the east side of the railway station and construct a stable ramp on the west side. Alternative routes will be provided to ensure smooth pedestrian movement during the construction phase.
With these developments, Mumbai's infrastructure projects are expected to bring much-needed relief to daily commuters while improving traffic flow in key areas.
