Mumbai: BEST Bus Routes Updated, Check New Routes
In an effort to enhance the public transportation system in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) is initiating a significant overhaul, which includes the modification of 30 bus routes and the introduction of new air-conditioned (AC) services starting June 1. This move aims to facilitate smoother travel for passengers by enhancing connections with the Mumbai Metro Line 3.
One of the key features of this initiative is the launch of several new AC bus routes designed to offer commuters a more comfortable travel experience. These include A-8 from Mantralaya to Shivaji Nagar Terminus, A-44 which upgrades the existing route 44 from Kala Chowki to Worli Depot, and A-125 connecting Navy Nagar with Worli Depot via Mohammed Ali Road. Additional routes like A-241 from Santacruz to Malvani, A-175, a circular route from Pratiksha Nagar Depot, and A-490 from Mantralaya to Balkum in Thane East, among others, ensure extensive coverage across Mumbai's key suburbs and transit hubs.

In tandem with the introduction of new routes, BEST is also making adjustments to existing routes to better meet commuter needs. This includes the conversion of route 456 from an AC to a regular circular service and the renumbering of route 25 to route 29. Furthermore, the rerouting of the 11 Limited via Lalbaug flyover aims to streamline travel times and avoid congestion.
These efforts are part of a larger strategy to integrate BEST's services with the Mumbai Metro Line 3, especially with the upcoming launch of the Metro's second phase from BKC to Worli Naka and the final phase reaching Cuffe Parade. A total of 29 buses on 17 routes will be introduced for Metro Phase II, and an additional 50 buses will service 30 routes for Phase III. These buses will operate in ring-route patterns to connect metro stations with suburban rail stations and major commercial centers, significantly enhancing last-mile connectivity.
The revamp of BEST's services is expected to yield considerable benefits for commuters, including reduced waiting times by up to 15 minutes and improved feeder services to the metro system. The introduction of more AC buses during peak hours on high-demand routes will also enhance passenger comfort.
To address its financial challenges, BEST has proposed a fare revision strategy. This includes doubling the minimum fare for the first 5 km of travel and removing the fare caps of Rs 20 for non-AC and Rs 25 for AC services for journeys beyond 20 km. This adjustment is anticipated to generate an additional annual revenue of Rs 590 crore, pending approval from the Mumbai civic body and the Regional Transport Authority.
