Mumbai's Airoli-Katai Naka Project Gains Momentum, Poised To Slash Travel Time By 30 Minutes
The Airoli-Katai Naka Project in Mumbai has received a significant boost as the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) plans to appoint a contractor this month. The contractor will undertake the construction of the 6.72-kilometre elevated corridor between Shil and Katai. This project is expected to benefit residents of Dombivli, Ulhasnagar, and other nearby areas by providing smoother connectivity to other parts of the city.
According to officials, the project will establish a direct route between Navi Mumbai and the Kalyan-Dombivli region, reducing the distance to just seven kilometres. Currently, commuters have to take longer routes through Mahape or Thane. The project aims to enhance regional connectivity and alleviate traffic congestion within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), as reported by the Times of India.

Afcons Infrastructure has emerged as the lowest bidder for this project segment, with a bid of approximately Rs 2,018 crore. This is slightly higher than MMRDA's estimated cost of Rs 1,887 crore. Other bidders included Navayuga Engineering Company, APCO Infratech, and Ashoka Buildcon.
An MMRDA official commented, "We will review the bids and may negotiate prices. The final proposal will be presented to MMRDA's executive committee before issuing the work order to the successful bidder."
Connecting National Highways
Once completed, the Airoli-Katai Naka project is expected to reduce travel time by up to 30 minutes. The project will feature two tunnels and an elevated road. The section from Thane-Belapur Road to National Highway 4 will be 3.43 kilometres long, while the segment from Airoli Bridge to Thane-Belapur Road will cover 2.57 kilometres. Each of the twin tunnels will be 1.69 kilometres long, with three lanes and an additional emergency lane.
The Airoli-Katai Naka project is designed to accommodate the growing population in and around Kalyan, including areas such as Ulhasnagar, Ambernath, Dombivli, Vithalwadi, and Badlapur. It aims to significantly improve overall connectivity in the region.
