Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project Update: Mumbai To Ahmedabad In 3.5 Hours; Get Details Inside

A 260-metre pre-stressed concrete (PSC) bridge for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project has been completed over the under-construction National Expressway in Gujarat, the National High-Speed Rail Corporation (NHSRC) announced on Monday, as per a PTI report.

The bridge crosses the Delhi-Mumbai National Expressway-4 near Kosamba in Surat district via an elevated viaduct. This is the fifth PSC bridge built for the project and consists of 104 precast segments. It features four spans measuring 50 and 80 metres each and was constructed using the balanced cantilever method, which is suitable for larger spans. The bridge is located between the Surat and Bharuch bullet train stations.

To ensure safety and smooth traffic flow, construction was planned carefully, minimising inconvenience to the public. The government aims to start the first phase of bullet train operations between Surat and Bilimora in south Gujarat by 2026.

About Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project was launched on September 14, 2017, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart, Shinzo Abe. Covering a distance of 508 kilometres, the high-speed rail will use Japan's Shinkansen technology, reducing travel time to about three to three and a half hours.

The route will have 12 stations, including Mumbai, Thane, Virar, and Boisar in Maharashtra, and Vapi, Surat, Vadodara, and Ahmedabad in Gujarat. The total project cost is estimated at Rs 1.08 lakh crore, with Japanese expertise aiding in its design and construction.

A major highlight of the project is the single-tube undersea tunnel, which will house twin tracks. To support operations, 39 equipment rooms will be constructed at 37 locations along the tunnel. Officials noted that the tunnel is designed to allow trains to run at much higher speeds than those in the under-river tunnels of the Kolkata Metro.

With its advanced technology, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail project is expected to transform transportation in India, boosting connectivity and economic growth.
