Mumbai 1 Smart Card To Offer Discounts, Tourist Passes And More — Check What’s New For Commuters
Mumbai residents will soon be able to travel on various transport systems using just one ticket - the Mumbai 1 smart card, as reported by Times Now. This new card aims to make travel simpler and more comfortable for daily commuters.
Announced by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the Mumbai 1 card will work across Metro Lines 1, 2A, and 7, the monorail, local suburban trains, and public buses. It offers a contactless tap-and-pay system and is part of the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) scheme. The project is being launched by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and the State Bank of India (SBI).
Easy, Contactless Travel
The smart card will allow passengers to travel without the need to buy different tickets for different modes of transport. Commuters will be able to simply tap the card to pay and board, saving time and effort.
SBI says the card offers flexible fare options, including Store Value Passes that give 5 per cent discount on weekdays and 10 per cent on Sundays and national holidays.
There will also be trip-based passes, including 60-trip and 45-trip cards, as well as 1-day and 3-day tourist passes. Special fare concessions will be given to senior citizens, students, and differently-abled commuters. Recharging the card will be easy, with options available at metro stations, vending machines, SBI's website, and other outlets.
The card may also be linked to Metro Line 3 once it becomes fully operational, further improving travel convenience in the city.
Big Investment In Mumbai's Rail Network
At a press conference held with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Fadnavis said that the technical design of the card will be ready within a month.
Minister Vaishnaw also shared that infrastructure work worth Rs 1.73 lakh crore is happening across Maharashtra, with Rs 23,778 crore approved for new projects this year. A major share-Rs 17,000 crore-is being invested in upgrading Mumbai's railway system. This includes the introduction of 238 new air-conditioned local trains, which will soon begin production.
Boost To Tourism And Connectivity
Fadnavis also spoke about the upcoming Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Circuit Train, which aims to promote tourism. It will take passengers to important forts and historical places linked to the Maratha king.
In eastern Maharashtra, the Gondia-Ballarshah railway project has been cleared, improving links between Vidarbha, Telangana, and Chhattisgarh. The central government has approved Rs 4,019 crore for this project.
With better infrastructure and smart travel solutions coming together, the Mumbai 1 smart card is expected to greatly improve the daily travel experience for millions of Mumbaikars.
