Monsoon Surge: Mumbai Rains Cross 1,000-mm Mark, Reservoirs Replenished

After a slow start, Mumbai's monsoon season has picked up pace, surpassing the 1,000-mm rainfall mark earlier than last year. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Colaba station recorded 1,074.6 mm and Santacruz station measured 1,089.21 mm of rainfall as of the latest data.

Recent Rainfall Statistics

In the past 24 hours, IMD reported substantial rainfall with Colaba receiving 58 mm and Santacruz recording 38.5 mm. Meteorologists anticipate heavy to very heavy rainfall in Mumbai over the next week, attributing this to strengthened northwestern monsoon currents.

Impact On Reservoirs

The recent downpours have significantly boosted Mumbai's water reservoirs, increasing the total water stock by 4.73 per cent within a single day. As of 6:00 am on July 14, the combined water stock across Mumbai's seven reservoirs stands at 4,30,259 million litres, constituting 29.73 per cent of the required total stock.

According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data reported by NDTV Profit, key reservoirs show notable rises: Tansa Lake at 60.85 per cent capacity, Modak Sagar at 45.71 per cent, Middle Vaitarna at 27.07 per cent, Tulsi Lake at 76.54 per cent, and Vihar Lake at 52.08 per cent. Together, these reservoirs supply 385 crore litres of potable water to Mumbai, which requires a total useful water stock of 14,47,363 million litres.

Forecast For the Next 36 Hours

The next 36 hours are critical for Mumbai as the weather department predicts the possibility of 200 mm of rainfall during this period. An orange alert has been issued for Mumbai city and suburbs due to heavy rain currently affecting the western suburbs.
