Metro Line 4 Mumbai Status: MMRDA Completes Challenging Girder Installation At Vikhroli Junction

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has successfully erected a massive steel girder at Gandhinagar Junction in Vikhroli, an important crossing point on the Wadala-Kasarvadavali Metro Line 4, according to a Lokmat report. The steel structure weighs 540 metric tonnes and is 30 metres long. It has been lifted to a height of 24 metres from the ground, marking the completion of a very difficult stage of the project.

This key junction sees the crossing of several major routes - the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR), Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Road, Metro Line 6 (Swami Samarth Nagar to Vikhroli), and Metro Line 4. Because of the overlapping flyovers and metro routes, the construction at this location was highly complex.

Metro Line 4 Mumbai Status

According to MMRDA officials, the full steel bridge being built at this junction will be 62.7 metres long. The remaining portions of the bridge - a 17-metre girder on the Vikhroli side and a 15-metre girder on the Mulund side - are now in the final stages of erection. This entire stretch is being completed in phases to ensure safety and manage traffic flow.

MMRDA engineers noted that the construction at Gandhinagar was especially challenging due to the high traffic volume on LBS Road and JVLR, which often leads to jams at the junction. Despite the difficulties, the MMRDA team completed the first phase of girder installation successfully by careful planning and coordination.

Take a Poll

Metro Line 4 is one of the most ambitious metro lines in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, aiming to connect Wadala in the south to Kasarvadavali in Thane. MMRDA aims to begin operations on the first phase of the route - from Gaimukh to Cadbury Junction in Thane - by the end of 2025. The second phase - from Cadbury Junction to Gandhinagar - is expected to be completed by December 2026.

The MMRDA is pushing to complete the entire Metro 4 line at the earliest to ease congestion and improve connectivity between Mumbai and Thane. The successful installation of this heavy steel girder is seen as a significant achievement in that direction.
