BMC Launches Mangrove Nurseries Initiative In Eksar, Borivali To Mitigate Environmental Impact

In an effort to balance urban development with environmental conservation, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to establish mangrove nurseries on 15 acres of land in Eksar, Borivali. This initiative aims to compensate for the destruction of mangroves due to the Versova-Bhayandar Sea Link (VBSL) project. The BMC has been granted 84 acres by M/s Dynamics Clubs and Resorts Pvt Ltd at a nominal rent of ₹1 per year.

The BMC intends to nurture saplings in these nurseries, which will later be transplanted along the 22-km sea link and in Bhayandar once construction begins. On Saturday, they invited objections or claims regarding the land from individuals or companies, with a deadline of 15 days for responses, as reported by HT.

Mangrove Replanting Initiative

Approximately 9,000 mangrove trees are directly in the path of the sea link's piers. Additionally, another 50,000 will be impacted by shadow areas created by the elevated structure. To address this, the BMC plans to replant mangroves at a ratio of 1:3—three new trees for each one affected.

This initiative marks the first time BMC is taking such proactive measures to replant mangroves on a large scale. The commitment is part of their Environmental Management Plan submitted to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MOEFCC). The civic body has pledged to plant over 137,000 saplings in Bhayandar and Chandrapur.

Environmental Significance

The Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) previously directed BMC to ensure these plantations are established before the sea link becomes operational. For environmentalists, this project is crucial as it ensures similar salinity and soil conditions for transplanted mangroves due to its proximity to VBSL.

Civic officials acknowledge that sapling survival rates can be unpredictable. Therefore, more than the required 130,000 saplings will be planted. If successful, these nurseries will not only replace lost greenery but also reinforce Mumbai's efforts to coexist with its natural environment.

The Eksar plot's location along the same coast as VBSL provides favourable conditions for mangrove growth. This project represents a rare harmony between urban development and ecological preservation—a testament to Mumbai's commitment to maintaining its natural resilience while pursuing urban ambitions.
