Maharashtra Weather Alert: IMD Issues Red Warning For Heavy Rains In Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red signal for Maharashtra's southern Konkan area, with districts such as Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg expecting to experience heavy to extremely severe rainfall in the coming days. IMD scientist Shubhangi A Bhute verified that the advisory is based on weather models that predict heavy precipitation in certain places.

In addition to the red alert, the IMD has issued an orange alert for the Raigad area, indicating the possibility of severe weather, albeit significantly less extreme than those in the red alert zones. A yellow notice has been issued for sections of North Konkan, suggesting that while present conditions are milder, they are being closely monitored.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture out to sea due to the formation of a depression in the region, which poses a potential threat to maritime safety.

Rainfall Outlook for Maharashtra

Maharashtra, notably the Konkan belt, has been suffering sustained heavy rains in recent days as a stronger weather system develops over the Arabian Sea. An upper air cyclonic circulation is currently hovering above the east-central Arabian Sea, near the beaches of north Karnataka and Goa. According to the IMD, this system will evolve into a low-pressure region by Thursday before intensifying into a depression on Friday.

While the system forms over the sea, the IMD has stated that the North Konkan coastal region will bear the brunt of the impact, with the interior parts of Maharashtra unlikely to be affected. "We are closely monitoring the situation," an IMD official told The Times of India.

From May 21 to 25, the IMD predicts widespread light to moderate rainfall across Konkan and Goa, as well as Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada. Thunderstorms, lightning, and wind gusts of 40-50 kmph are likely to accompany these showers. During the same time period, Gujarat is also expected to receive scattered to widespread rains.
