Maharashtra Weather Alert: IMD Issues Red Alert For Mumbai, Heavy Rain And Thunderstorms Expected
Maharashtra Weather Alert: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai and nearby regions due to anticipated heavy rainfall and thunderstorms over the weekend. This warning, announced on Saturday, indicates intense weather conditions are expected as oligo cyclonic conditions and weak southwest monsoon winds impact the area.
Earlier in the week, Mumbai experienced significant rainfall, with some areas seeing heavy downpours. On Friday, isolated showers occurred across the metropolitan region, with Santa Cruz receiving 14 mm of rain while Colaba remained dry. These moderate showers created a humid atmosphere for residents.

Monsoon Conditions: Light to Moderate Rainfall
Meteorologists predict light to moderate rainfall will persist through the weekend, with thunderstorms becoming more frequent. Over the last six days, Colaba recorded 30 mm of rain and Santa Cruz registered 47.1 mm. Temperatures have been slightly below average but high humidity has made it feel warmer.
As rain continues in Mumbai, other Maharashtra regions like Jalgaon, Nashik, Pune, and Nagpur are also experiencing similar weather. Isolated thunderstorms are expected in these districts along with cloudy skies. The weather pattern extends from Madhya Maharashtra to Coastal Andhra Pradesh and parts of Karnataka and Telangana.
Thunderstorm Activity May Decrease
The IMD warns that thunderstorm activity may decrease if conditions change, but rain is expected throughout the weekend. Residents should stay updated on weather warnings and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during this period.
Despite monsoon challenges, some farmers report positive outcomes with successful crops like organic Iranian dates yielding good profits. However, local authorities urge caution as thunderstorms and heavy rain could lead to localized flooding and disruptions.
Other Affected Regions of Maharashtra
IMD Scientist Sushma Nair explains that a Yellow Alert was issued for the next 24 hours while a Red Alert was given for an intense spell of rainfall lasting 2-3 hours. "That particular spell is now subsiding," she says, "which is why it was categorised as a nowcast warning."
The ongoing monsoon has brought moderate rainfall to Mumbai with temperatures around 32.2°C in Colaba and 31.7°C in Santa Cruz.
