Maharashtra Schools Closed July 8-9? What Students, Parents & Teachers Must Know
Confusion recently emerged among parents and students in Maharashtra regarding school closures due to a planned strike by teachers and non-teaching staff on July 8 and 9. The Maharashtra Education Department has clarified that schools will remain open on these dates. This announcement comes amid reports of a statewide protest by educators seeking resolution to their pending demands.
Despite the decision to keep schools operational, thousands of teachers from various institutions across Maharashtra are expected to converge at Azad Maidan in Mumbai. Their protest coincides with the monsoon session of the state assembly, aiming to highlight unmet promises concerning financial aid for aided schools.

Teachers' Protest and Government Response
The Teachers' Coordination Committee had initially announced plans to close schools statewide in support of their demands related to grants and benefits. However, Mahesh Palekar, Director of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, issued an official order confirming that schools would function as usual on July 8 and 9.
Last year, from August 1, 2024, teachers and non-teaching staff engaged in a 75-day statewide agitation. They demanded increased funding for aided schools. Although the government initially responded positively, the official Government Resolution (GR) issued on October 14, 2024, did not deliver the promised funds.
Unfulfilled Promises Lead to Renewed Strike
A cabinet meeting held on October 10, 2024, chaired by the then Chief Minister, assured teachers that the next tranche of grants would be released. However, with no progress even after a year, the teachers' union has decided to resume its strike to press for their demands.
The ongoing protests underscore the frustration among educators over unfulfilled commitments. The lack of financial aid has led them to take action once again. The protest at Azad Maidan aims to draw attention from government officials during this critical legislative session.
The situation highlights ongoing tensions between educators and authorities over funding issues. As teachers gather in Mumbai for their demonstration, they hope for a resolution that addresses their concerns effectively.
