Maharashtra School Holiday Today: Educational Institutions To Remain Shut Due To Heavy Rains In This District

Nagpur has been grappling with relentless heavy rains for the past three days, throwing normal life out of gear in both urban and rural areas. With the downpour showing no signs of letting up and more rainfall predicted, District Collector Vipin Itankar has declared a holiday for all schools in the district on Wednesday as a safety measure. The order applies to both government and private educational institutions.

Non-stop Rainfall for Over 60 Hours

The rains, which began late Sunday night, have continued without a break, with Nagpur recording nearly 172.2 mm of rainfall by Wednesday morning. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a Yellow Alert for July 9, cautioning residents about further downpours.

Daily activities across the city have taken a hit. Waterlogging is widespread, with key roads and low-lying areas submerged. Several streets resemble rivers, forcing vehicles to move at a snail's pace. Commuters are facing long traffic jams, particularly in busy market zones, while many residents are finding it difficult to step out even for basic needs.

Local officials continue to monitor the situation and have urged people to avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve.

Teachers' Protest

In a separate development, teachers across the government and government-aided schools are holding protests, urging the state government to fulfil their demands. The movement is being spearheaded by key organizations such as the Maharashtra State Headmasters' Association, the Joint Headmasters' Association, and various teachers' unions.

While it was reported earlier that the schools will remain closed on July 8 and 9, Mahesh Palekar, the Director of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, said on Tuesday that the educational institutions will remain open, NDTV reported.

However, the educators have vowed to continue their fight until their financial and service-related grievances are fully addressed.

This protest traces its roots to an earlier 75-day agitation that began in August 2024, where educators called for increased financial support for aided and partially aided schools. Although the state cabinet approved their demands in October 2024, the promised funds are yet to be released, leading to mounting frustration among teachers.
