Maharashtra MLC Elections 2024: 11 Seats, 12 Candidates, And Resort Politics Amid Horse-Trading Fears

Maharashtra is witnessing a pivotal election to fill 11 Legislative Council seats following the Maha Vikas Aghadi's (MVA) recent success in the Lok Sabha elections, where they secured 30 out of 48 seats.

This has intensified the political landscape, especially with concerns over potential cross-voting and horse-trading prompting parties to strategically relocate candidates to resorts, as reported by Business Today.

Maharashtra MLC Elections 2024

The Maharashtra Assembly, with 288 seats and currently 274 members, necessitates 23 first-preference votes per MLC candidate for election. The Mahayuti coalition, part of the NDA alliance, comprising BJP, Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena faction, and Ajit Pawar's NCP wing, has fielded nine candidates supported by 201 MLAs, including Independents and smaller parties.

In contrast, the MVA alliance, comprising Congress, Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena, and Sharad Pawar's NCP, despite having 67 MLAs, has put forth three candidates. The neutrality of six MLAs, including an Independent, adds a crucial variable as 12 candidates compete for 11 MLC seats, as per Hindustan Times report.

Speculation mounts around defections within Ajit Pawar's NCP faction following its modest Lok Sabha performance, potentially bolstering the opposition's confidence to field a third candidate. Uddhav Thackeray, highlighting his alliance's preparedness, stated, "We wouldn't field a third candidate if we weren't assured of victory."

The electoral manoeuvring in Maharashtra remains a numbers game, heightened by strategic moves from all sides. The BJP, with 103 MLAs, has nominated five candidates but fell short by 12 votes. Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena faction, with 37 MLAs, aims to secure seats for Krupal Tumane and Bhawana Gawli, needing nine additional votes.

Similarly, Ajit Pawar's NCP faction, with 39 MLAs, lacks seven votes to meet the required threshold of 46. The coalition is banking on support from nine smaller party MLAs and 13 Independents to bridge these gaps. On the other front, the Congress, with 37 MLAs, has fielded Pradnya Satav and holds a surplus of 14 votes, as reported by Hindustan Times.

Sharad Pawar's loyal NCP faction, with 13 MLAs, supports Jayant Patil from the Peasants and Workers Party. Despite having just 15 MLAs, Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena faction nominated Milind Narvekar, facing an eight-vote deficit. The Congress's surplus votes and backing from key independents like AIMIM, SP, CPI(M), and others are seen as pivotal in overcoming these challenges.

As the election approaches, party preparations are in full swing. Congress hosted a crucial dinner for its MLAs, emphasizing unity in voting for MVA candidates, as per media reports. Uddhav Thackeray convened his MLAs at a central Mumbai hotel for an overnight stay, while Ajit Pawar's faction opted for accommodations near the airport.

BJP MLAs are also stationed at luxury hotels, contrasting with NCP's confidence in its MLAs' steadfastness. The election for the 11 Legislative Council seats in Maharashtra promises to be a keenly watched affair, shaping the state's political landscape in the months ahead.
