Maharashtra Government Unveils New Women's Policy To Foster Gender Equality And Empowerment

The Maharashtra government has introduced several measures to empower women. Recently, they implemented their fourth women's policy on International Women's Day, aiming to promote gender equality. One notable change is the requirement to list mothers' names first on government documents. This policy follows previous ones from 1994, 2001, and 2014, which also aimed at comprehensive development for women. The new women's policy targets eight crucial areas: women's health, nutrition, and welfare; education and skill development; elimination of sexual and gender-based violence; increasing women's livelihood; improving infrastructure for women; women's governance and political participation; climate change adaptation and disaster management; and a special sports policy.

New Women s Policy Launched in Maharashtra

Free health check-up camps are being organised in remote areas for urban, rural, and tribal populations. The state government ensures better treatment facilities in all government hospitals for various health issues like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), endocrine disorders, cancer, urinary tract infections (UTIs), tuberculosis (TB), and menopausal problems.

Promote Childcare Centres and Education

The policy includes provisions for childcare centres in establishments and special industrial zones with many women employees. It also aims for 100% enrolment of girls in secondary and higher secondary schools in remote rural, urban, and tribal areas. Skill development programmes will be tailored to the specific needs and capabilities of each area.

Dealing with Sexual and Gender Violence

To address sexual and gender-based violence, Internal Committees will be formed as per the guidelines of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act. Additionally, trust cells will be established in all police headquarters. The policy also proposes mandatory maternity and paternity leave for semi-government and private companies.

Encouragement for Women-Friendly Agricultural Machinery

Recognising the significant role of women in agriculture, especially in rural areas, industries will be encouraged to manufacture easy-to-use agricultural machinery designed specifically for women. This initiative is a significant step towards gender-inclusive agricultural development.

Three-Tier Committee for Effective Implementation

A high-level committee headed by the Chief Minister will monitor the policy's implementation at the state level. Separate committees led by the Minister of Women and Child Development and the District Guardian Ministers will also be involved. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar expressed confidence that these committees' support would ensure effective implementation of the policy and promote women's empowerment throughout Maharashtra. The Maharashtra government's previous women's policies were introduced in 1994, 2001, and 2014. These policies focused on comprehensive and inclusive development for women. The new policy continues this tradition by addressing various aspects crucial to women's empowerment. In summary, the Maharashtra government's new women's policy is a comprehensive approach to empowering women across multiple sectors. By focusing on health, education, safety, livelihood, infrastructure, governance, climate change adaptation, disaster management, and sports, the state aims to create a more inclusive environment for women.
