Maharashtra Election: Shinde Sena All Set To Retain Its Stronghold - Kolhapur North

After the turmoil in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) over the Kolhapur North constituency, the alliance finally decided to support Congress' rebel independent candidate Rajesh Latkar.

Initially, Latkar was nominated, then Madhurimaraje was fielded, followed by the withdrawal drama, and then disputes, leading the Congress to ultimately back its rebel independent candidate in the Kolhapur North Assembly constituency. Latkar now faces Shiv Sena's Rajesh Kshirsagar, representing the BJP-led MahaYuti alliance.

The MahaYuti alliance's unity and structured campaign efforts currently serve as strengths for Kshirsagar, who appears to have the upper hand amidst the MVA's internal discord.

Turmoil in the MVA Over Nominations

For the Kolhapur North Assembly seat, Congress initially announced the candidature of former councillor Rajesh Latkar. However, following this announcement, stones were thrown at the Congress office. After this incident, Congress changed its candidate within a day and nominated Madhurimaraje Chhatrapati.

Acting upon Shahu Maharaj's directive, Madhurimaraje Chhatrapati withdrew her candidacy at the last moment. In the midst of this chaos, Congress rebel Rajesh Latkar filed and retained his nomination as an independent candidate. Ultimately, Congress had to extend support to Latkar.

Internal Congress Disputes Go Public

The situation in Kolhapur heated up with the issue of candidate selection between Latkar and Madhurimaraje. Raju Latkar insisted on his nomination, even meeting Shahu Maharaj twice about it. Eventually, Shahu Maharaj persuaded Madhurimaraje to withdraw her nomination.

However, this led Congress leader Satej Patil to express frustration. A video of Patil's anger went viral, where he questioned why he was left in an awkward position and stated that he wouldn't spare those responsible for the dispute. He expressed regret that there was no consensus between the supporters of Satej Patil and Shahu Maharaj, creating a visible divide among Congress workers.

Rajesh Kshirsagar's Focus on Development

Kshirsagar, who has been an MLA twice, lost in 2019. Despite this, he continued to work on local issues. Through the State Planning Board, he facilitated projects in Shivaji Peth and other city areas, including the beautification of Rankala Lake and Gandhi Maidan.

Shivaji Peth holds historical significance with temples, lakes, and grounds that he has helped conserve and develop. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has also allocated Rs 25 crore for the redevelopment of the Keshavrao Bhosale theatre, which is currently underway. Plans to concretize 100% of the city's roads are also in place.

These developments contribute to Kshirsagar's current advantage.

Eknath Shinde's Record Development Funds

To combat pollution in Kolhapur's Panchganga River, Shinde sanctioned millions in funds. Additionally, Rs 3200 crore were allotted to protect Kolhapur-Sangli from flooding. Shinde allocated Rs 25 crore to the iconic Keshavrao Bhosale Theatre, and beautification work for Rankala Lake is planned.

Funds have also been invested in projects like the Dharmaveer Anand Dighe Wrestling Complex, the Mahalakshmi Ambabai Temple Pilgrimage Development, and Jyotiba Authority initiatives. These projects are in progress, adding to Rajesh Kshirsagar's strength in the constituency.

Support Extended, but Discontent Within the MVA

The MVA-supported independent candidate Rajesh Latkar was initially nominated by Congress. However, following an attack on the Congress office by angry workers, his nomination was changed.

Madhurimaraje, who was subsequently nominated, also withdrew at the last moment, leaving the MVA embarrassed. As a result, Congress had no choice but to support Latkar, leading to a situation where the party's "hand" symbol is missing from the field.

Meanwhile, factions within the Thackeray and Pawar camps in the MVA were also insistent on fielding their own candidates.

Despite Congress' fight to retain this seat, it ultimately could not keep its "hand" symbol in the race. Given this chaos, there is doubt over whether the MVA's candidate can win.

Observers suggest that this situation presents a golden opportunity for Shiv Sena's Rajesh Kshirsagar to retain his stronghold in the constituency.
