Maharashtra Assembly Elections 2024: Paid Holiday For Mumbai Employees On Polling Day

In a bid to ensure maximum voter turnout for the Maharashtra Assembly elections, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced that all employees working in businesses, establishments, and workplaces in Mumbai will be granted a paid leave on November 20.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani confirmed that this paid holiday applies to workers across all sectors, including industrial, commercial, and service-based establishments.

As per the directives of the Election Commission, the rule is mandatory for all businesses, industrial enterprises, corporations, and institutions within the Brihanmumbai region. Gagrani emphasized that any violations of this directive will lead to penalties for employers, not employees, ensuring workers are not penalized for casting their votes.

No Salary Deductions for Voting

The District Election Officer's order also ensures that employees will not face salary deductions for taking time off to vote. Employers who fail to comply with this directive will be subject to penalties according to the Election Commission's guidelines, guaranteeing that workers can participate in the election without any financial consequences.

The order states: "Every person engaged in any business, trade, industrial undertaking, or any other establishment in the polling area where the election is held and entitled to vote in the State Assembly elections shall be given a holiday on the polling day, Wednesday, November 20, 2024."
