Maharashtra Assembly Election 2024: What You Need To Know About Dry Days And November 20 Holiday
Mumbai and other cities across Maharashtra will observe several dry days in November 2024 due to the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections. The Election Commission of India has mandated these restrictions to ensure peaceful and orderly voting.
Dry days refer to specific dates when alcohol sales are prohibited in a region. These measures are often introduced during national events, religious festivals, or elections to maintain public order and prevent disruptions.

The Election Commission has announced the following dry days for liquor sales in Maharashtra:
- November 18: Alcohol sales banned after 6 PM.
- November 19: A complete ban throughout the day, one day before voting.
- November 20: Alcohol sales prohibited until 6 PM on polling day.
- November 23: Ban until 6 PM as election results are declared.
These steps aim to ensure that elections are conducted peacefully and that citizens can participate responsibly.
The Maharashtra Assembly elections will take place on November 20, with voting across all 288 constituencies on the same day. The election results are scheduled to be announced on November 23.
To encourage voter turnout, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared November 20 a public holiday for all businesses and offices within its jurisdiction.
Additionally, the Reserve Bank of India has listed a holiday. Banks in Maharashtra will be closed on November 20 due to the Assembly General Election. However, customers can still access banking services through ATMs, digital banking, and UPI platforms. Online transactions will remain operational, allowing for urgent banking needs, even on a holiday.
Key Details
- No penalties: Employers cannot deduct salaries or impose penalties on employees for taking the day off to vote.
- Strict enforcement: According to BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, strict action will be taken against businesses that fail to comply with this rule.
These measures aim to ensure a smooth and fair election process while encouraging citizens to exercise their right to vote.
