Maharashtra Assembly Election 2024: A Face-Off Between Two Senas— Who Will Triumph?

The upcoming Maharashtra assembly election is set to be a crucial test for both factions of the Shiv Sena. Uddhav Thackeray's decision to part ways with the NDA and align with the Congress and the Sharad Pawar-led NCP after the 2019 polls marked a significant shift in his party's ideology.

This election will validate whether this strategic alliance resonates with the voters or not. Meanwhile, Eknath Shinde's 2022 rebellion, which drastically changed Maharashtra's political landscape, will also be put to the test. Simply put, it's Shiv Sena versus Shiv Sena - a battle for survival and dominance.

Shinde Confident With Ladki Bahin Yojana Support

Eknath Shinde, buoyed by the popularity of the Ladki Bahin Yojana, is optimistic about the election outcome. According to a close aide, Shinde predicts that his alliance, the Mahayuti, will secure around 155 to 160 seats out of the total 288, while the rival Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) is expected to win approximately 120 to 125 seats. His recent rally in Kalwa, Thane, saw an enthusiastic turnout, particularly among women voters, including many from the Muslim community.

Uddhav Thackeray Rallies The Troops

On the other side, Uddhav Thackeray has been working hard to revitalise his faction, Shiv Sena (UBT), by strengthening the shakha (branch) network. Despite the 2022 split and the defection of several senior leaders, Thackeray's party machinery remains robust. However, some of his key allies have stepped back from active politics due to age or defection, leaving him with a smaller team to manage the campaign's finer details.

Fierce Battle For The MMR Region

The most intense electoral battles are expected in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), including Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and surrounding areas. The two Shiv Sena factions will face off in nearly 53 seats, with 11 of these in Mumbai alone. These constituencies have a significant Marathi voter base, making them critical for both sides.

For decades, the Shiv Sena under Bal Thackeray had a stronghold in Thane, which played a pivotal role in its rise in state politics. Eknath Shinde, who started his political journey in Thane, is keen to capitalise on his influence there, aiming to capture Bal Thackeray's legacy and appeal to Marathi and BC-OBC voters.

Shinde's Strategy And Uddhav's Challenge

Shinde is focused on increasing his party's seat count to strengthen his bargaining power with the BJP and possibly secure another term as Chief Minister. However, he faces criticism for lacking a widespread organisational presence outside the MMR region. Analysts argue that while his popularity is strong in certain areas, his party's influence is not yet statewide.

Uddhav Thackeray, on the other hand, is relying on his previous tenure as Chief Minister, especially during the challenging Covid-19 period, to garner voter support. He is also tapping into the dissatisfaction among Marathi-speaking Mumbaikars over the perceived dominance of the builder lobby in Mumbai. Thackeray has been vocal against this influence, which could pose challenges for Shinde, a BJP ally.

Potential Spoilers And Post-Poll Uncertainty

The election also sees a new twist with the BJP bringing Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) into the mix. This move could complicate the Shiv Sena factions' strategies, especially in constituencies like Mahim where Raj's son, Amit Thackeray, is contesting.

Political experts believe that the election is not just a contest between Uddhav Thackeray and Eknath Shinde but also between regional aspirations and the influence of national parties like the BJP. The outcome will not only shape the future of both Senas but also the political dynamics in Maharashtra.

A Tightrope Walk For Both Leaders

Both Uddhav and Shinde are navigating a complex political landscape. While Uddhav is trying to appeal to Marathi voters with his focus on regional issues, Shinde is using his alliance with the BJP to project himself as a leader who can deliver development and quick solutions.

In the end, this election is more than just a battle for seats; it's a fight for legacy, influence, and the future direction of one of Maharashtra's most iconic political parties.
