Kothrud Constituency: Chandrakant Patil Takes On Sena's Chandrakant Mokate, MNS' Kishor Shinde

Kothrud constituency in Pune, known for its affluent Brahmin-majority population, is currently witnessing an intense political battle as the Maharashtra state elections approach on November 20.

Chandrakant Patil, the incumbent and BJP candidate, seeks re-election, contending against strong rivals from the Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS. Despite the area's loyalty to BJP since 2014 and a substantial voter base of 436,472, residents express growing concerns over traffic congestion and infrastructure inadequacies.

During the 2019 state elections, the BJP made a strategic decision to replace Medha Kulkarni, who held the Kothrud seat from 2014 to 2019 and now serves in the Rajya Sabha, with Chandrakant Patil.

Despite initial scepticism regarding Patil's outsider status, being from Kolhapur, he managed to win the seat by overcoming MNS's Kishor Shinde, who had the backing of Congress and NCP, with a significant lead of over 25,000 votes. This victory underscored Patil's ability to connect with the constituents of Kothrud, despite concerns about his origins.

This year's electoral contest presents a formidable challenge to Patil. Chandrakant Mokate of Shiv Sena (UBT), a former Kothrud MLA and local figure, is banking on his longstanding ties with the community.

Mokate has been vocal about the perceived stagnation in infrastructure development under Patil's tenure, particularly highlighting the persistent traffic snarls near Bhusari Colony road, notwithstanding the new Chandni Chowk flyover. He attributes the flyover's realization to Union minister Nitin Gadkari and his involvement in a multi-party agitation 12 years ago, emphasizing his proactive approach to addressing local issues.

Moreover, MNS's Kishor Shinde, who is contesting again, has critiqued Patil's performance as Pune's guardian minister and as the revenue minister in the previous government, pointing out a lack of significant development initiatives in Kothrud during his term. Despite once considering Mokate a political mentor, Shinde is confident in his campaign, propelled by the electorate's dissatisfaction with ongoing issues that have not been adequately addressed under Patil's leadership.

Local residents, including Sanjay Kaikade, echo the sentiment of frustration regarding the unresolved traffic congestion, suggesting that extending the Metro line to Hinjawadi could potentially mitigate commuting woes for many. Supporting Chandrakant Patil, Deepak Mankar, the city unit chief of the Ajit Pawar-led NCP within the ruling Mahayuti alliance, predicts a substantial victory margin for Patil. This confidence stems from the positive public response to the alliance's community-focused policies and concerted efforts to rally support throughout Pune, indicating a unified front in favour of Patil amidst the heated electoral competition.
