Kanjoor Marg Dumping Ground: BMC Responds To Local Calls For Immediate Closure
Residents of Vikhroli and Kanjoor Marg have been expressing growing concerns over the unbearable stench emanating from the Kanjoor Marg dumping ground, as reported by Lokmat. The locals are calling for its immediate closure, but senior officials from the Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have said in the report that this cannot happen until a new site for waste disposal is found. The contract for the current dumping ground is set to expire in 2027, and BMC is actively searching for an alternative location to handle the city's waste once the contract ends.
In the past, the Gorai dumping ground was shut down, and the Deonar dumping ground is currently over capacity. BMC has plans to convert part of the Deonar site into a waste-to-energy plant, although this project is still in the planning stages. Another section of the Deonar land is earmarked for the rehabilitation of project-affected people in Dharavi. As a result, the Kanjoor Marg dumping ground is currently the only site where the city's waste is being disposed of.

BMC has also begun setting up waste collection centres in various areas, where waste is processed locally to reduce the burden on the main dumping grounds. These centres will be expanded in the near future to help manage waste more efficiently and reduce the need for dumping.
The Kanjoor Marg dumping ground has sparked strong protests at the local level. The Vikhroli Development Forum has taken legal action, seeking to close the facility. Many political parties, during the Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections, promised to close the site, though BMC officials have confirmed that the contract will run until 2027 and will not be renewed.
BMC is actively inspecting potential sites for a new dumping ground, with Ambernath now being considered after an earlier proposal for Taloja was opposed by local residents.
