Kakkaiya Shetty Road Now 18m Wide: Commute Cut By 2 Km After Demolition Of 75 Illegal Structures
The Kakkaiya Shetty Road in Bhandup West has been widened following the demolition of 75 unauthorised structures by the municipal authorities on Wednesday, as per a Lokmat report. The road's width has been increased from three meters to 18 meters, providing significant relief to local residents. This clearance has also reduced the commute by two kilometers for many people in the area.
The demolition operation was carried out by the anti-encroachment team of the municipality, led by Deputy Commissioner (Zone 6) Santosh Kumar Dhonde and Assistant Commissioner of S Division Bhaskar Kasgikar. The campaign involved two bulldozers, two JCBs, two other vehicles, 80 workers, 30 engineers, and 15 policemen. During this action, 62 houses and 13 shops were demolished. Eligible slum dwellers had already been rehabilitated to nearby locations prior to the demolition.

Prior to this operation, the road from Hind Rectifier Company to Kakkaiya Shetty had been severely narrowed to just 3 meters due to encroachments. As a result, only one vehicle could pass through at a time towards Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg. This congestion forced many commuters to take a detour, adding two extra kilometers to their daily journey to areas like Gavdevi and Tulshetpada.
Now that the road has been cleared, residents can easily reach their destination in just 50 meters instead of the earlier two kilometers. The 75 structures that were demolished had both a ground floor and an upper floor. This road widening is expected to improve traffic flow and significantly ease daily travel for the locals, making the area much more accessible and less congested.
