Jogeshwari Terminus Update: AC Lounges, EV Bays, And 24-Coach Trains Coming By Late 2025
For the first time since 1991, Mumbai will soon welcome a brand-new greenfield rail terminus. According to a mid-day report, the upcoming Jogeshwari Terminus, located near the Ram Mandir suburban railway station, is expected to open by October or November 2025. This new facility is designed to reduce the pressure on Mumbai's already burdened railway termini such as Bandra, Dadar, and Mumbai Central, which currently handle a heavy load of long-distance passengers.
The last independent terminus built in the city was the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) in Kurla. While some stations like Panvel and Dadar (Western) have been upgraded over the years, Jogeshwari Terminus marks the first full-scale terminus construction in more than three decades. The location is strategically chosen with easy access from SV Road, and the terminus is expected to serve both local commuters and long-distance travellers more efficiently.

What Is Being Built
Jogeshwari Terminus is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 76.84 crore. It will have three platforms, including one island and one home platform, each stretching 600 metres in length. Initially, Platforms 2 and 3 will be opened in the first phase, while Platform 1 will be operational at a later stage. The terminus has the capacity to handle 24-coach trains, and will facilitate the arrival and departure of 12 pairs of mail and express trains daily.
To support the operations, the terminus will have two berthing lines for train parking and an additional shunting line. Provision for watering trains on the platform will allow trains to return to service without the need for full maintenance facilities, ensuring quicker turnaround times, the report added.
Passenger And Staff Facilities
The design of the new terminus places strong emphasis on passenger comfort. A Ground+3 passenger station building is planned, which will house air-conditioned VIP and general waiting lounges equipped with toilets, baths, mobile charging points, and pantry services. The terminus will also offer four AC and four non-AC double-bed retiring rooms, gender-segregated dormitories with six beds each, a food plaza, and an entertainment zone. There will be a dedicated rest area with full facilities for 50 licensed porters.
In addition, a Ground+2 service building will accommodate operational staff and include a relay room. Two new foot overbridges are part of the project. A 6-metre-wide bridge will connect the terminus to the Ram Mandir station and will include escalators and a lift to assist senior citizens and people with disabilities. Another 12-metre-wide bridge will connect all three platforms at the new terminus, easing the flow of passengers.
Travel-Friendly Features
As per the same report, the new terminus will include a dedicated circulating area designed with separate pickup and drop zones for taxis, auto-rickshaws, and app-based cab services like Ola and Uber. It will also feature parking facilities, VIP bays, and electric vehicle (EV) charging points. Importantly, the terminus is well-connected to the city's road and metro network-it is just 500 metres from the nearest Metro station and has direct access to the Western Express Highway, which will help ease travel for commuters coming from western suburbs like Dahisar and Mira Road.
A Unique Architectural Touch
The Jogeshwari Terminus will stand out with a dome-shaped Proflex roof-a self-supported structure that is both modern and functional. This type of roofing is a departure from traditional Indian Railways platform covers and adds an aesthetic appeal to the infrastructure.
Construction Progress
Work on the project is moving ahead steadily, added the mid-day report. The Ground+2 service building is 90 per cent complete, while 125 out of 178 foundation piles have been completed for the station building. Platform walls are 85 per cent complete, and 104 out of 136 support columns for the platform cover structure have been erected.
When completed, Jogeshwari Terminus will offer not just a boost to Mumbai's railway capacity but also a modern, commuter-friendly experience. It is being seen as a long-awaited addition to the city's transport infrastructure that may finally ease the burden on its congested stations.
