India’s Longest Sea Bridge Atal Setu In Mumbai Breaks Records: 50 Lakh Vehicles Cruise In Seven Months

India's longest sea bridge, the Atal Setu, has witnessed an impressive volume of traffic since it was inaugurated just over seven months ago. According to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), more than 50 lakh vehicles have traversed the bridge, highlighting its critical role in easing congestion and improving connectivity between Mumbai and its satellite city, Navi Mumbai.

The Atal Setu, also known as the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), was officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 12 and opened to the public the following day.

Since then, a total of 50,04,350 vehicles, including Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) buses, Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) buses, and Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation's (MSRTC) Shivneri buses, have utilised the bridge. This equates to an average of 22,000 vehicles per day over 227 days.

A spokesperson for the MMRDA provided a detailed breakdown of the traffic in Hindustan Times, noting that 47.40 lakh cars, 50,020 minibuses and light motor vehicles, 59,799 double-axle vehicles, 73,074 three-axle vehicles, 80,277 four-six axle vehicles, and 503 oversized vehicles have used the bridge during this period.

The Atal Setu connects Sewri in Mumbai with Nhava Sheva in Navi Mumbai, significantly reducing travel time between South Mumbai and key destinations such as Panvel, Pune, and Navi Mumbai. The bridge's high usage underscores its importance in managing traffic and enhancing the overall connectivity in the region.

The MMRDA also highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects related to the bridge. The Worli-Sewri elevated road, which is 75 per cent complete, is expected to provide rapid five to 10-minute connectivity from Worli Seaface to Atal Setu.

Additionally, the development of an elevated road between the Chirle Interchange and the Mumbai-Pune Expressway promises even faster commutes between South Mumbai, the western suburbs, Navi Mumbai, Panvel, Pune, and the Mumbai-Goa Highway.
