Mumbai Lakes Water Level

According to data released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Friday morning, the water levels in Mumbai's seven key reservoirs, crucial for the city's drinking water supply, have risen to an impressive 93.23 per cent of their total capacity.

These reservoirs-Tulsi, Tansa, Vihar, Bhatsa, Modak Sagar, Upper Vaitarna, and Middle Vaitarna-now hold a combined water stock of approximately 1,349,365 million litres, thanks to the ongoing monsoon rains.

Here is a breakdown of their current levels:

  • Tansa Reservoir: 97.80 per cent of its capacity
  • Modak Sagar: 98.91 per cent of its capacity
  • Middle Vaitarna: 97.14 per cent of its capacity
  • Upper Vaitarna: 89.10 per cent of its capacity
  • Bhatsa: 91.20 per cent of its capacity
  • Tulsi: 99.46 per cent of its capacity
  • Vihar: Fully filled at 100 per cent of its capacity

The heavy rainfall has significantly impacted these reservoirs, leading to several of them overflowing. Middle Vaitarna Lake began overflowing on July 4, followed by Vihar and Modak Sagar on July 25, and Tansa Lake on July 24. The overflow from Tansa Lake on July 26, 2024, contributed an additional 17 days' worth of water supply to the city in just one day.

Tansa Lake, located in the Shahpur region of Thane, provides approximately 400 million gallons of water to Mumbai daily. Its overflow marks a key milestone in the city's water management.

Tulsi Lake, one of the two lakes that directly supply water to the BMC, began overflowing on July 20 at approximately 8:30 am. This overflow event mirrored a similar occurrence on the same day the previous year, which happened at 1:28 pm, as noted by the civic authorities.
