Heavy rains in Mumbai updates: 2,000 food packets dispatched for stranded passengers

Mumbai, July 10: Heavy rains continued to lash Mumbai and its adjoining areas, affecting normal life in several parts of the Mumbai. The city received 54 per cent of its average monsoon season rainfall just in the last 20 days, the city's civic body noted.

Mumbai was hit with 144.47 mm of rain, the eastern suburbs got 107.21 mm and the western suburbs received 131.32 mm till 8.30 a.m. It has continued with short spells of break. A 5-day day weather alert has been issued by the met office for Uttarakhand, Goa, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra region.

Between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm on Monday, the Colaba observatory recorded a rainfall of 104.8 mm.

Railway has approached NDRF for help to rescue passengers stranded on two trains between Vasai to Virar stations. The trains numbers are 12009 and 12928. “Due to lack of approached road in the area we are neither able to rescue them nor reverse the trains as water level is above 500 mm,”said Ravinder Bhakar, chief public relations officer of Western Railway.

Private weather forecasting agency Skymet Weather said in a tweet that Santacruz recorded 38 millimetres of rain in the last three hours. Heavy rains are expected to continue in the city and its neighbouring areas. Gujarat, Konkan, Goa and Madhya Pradesh are likely to observe vigorous monsoon conditions on Tuesday.

In the Maharashtra Assembly, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that 11 places in Mumbai were waterlogged and 150 additional pumps have been deployed to clear the water. He added that the state government will also consider to extend date of admissions for various courses if the situation demands.

Maharashtra State Education Minister Vinod Tawde Tuesday said, "Instructed Deputy Director to ensure that the schools in Thane and Palghar district remain closed due to the erratic weather conditions.
