As Maharashtra braces for elections, Mumbai's political climate is intensifying. Instead of a forward-looking development debate, the campaign is being shaped by corruption allegations from the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government's tenure. The opposition is raising the spectre of a return to "Hafta Vasooli 2.0" and a "cut-commission" culture, framing the election as a choice between transparency and old, exploitative systems.

Fear Among the Common Mumbaikar: The narrative centres on Mumbai's backbone-taxi drivers, small shopkeepers, and vendors. Opponents claim a change in power could revive alleged practices of systematic extortion ('Hafta') from small businesses, impacting the city's economic safety net.

The Sachin Vaze Shadow: The suspended officer remains a potent symbol in this narrative. The allegations of extortion in the Antilia case and the subsequent political storm are being cited as an example of how the "system" could target anyone, eroding trust in governance and the safety of 'Brand Mumbai'.
