PM Modi announced the approval on X, formerly Twitter, expressing the government's commitment to enhancing Maharashtra's infrastructure.

He stated, "It is our constant endeavour to ensure Maharashtra gets modern infrastructure. Today, the Union Cabinet has cleared the Thane Integral Ring Metro Rail Project. This is a landmark infrastructure project which will link key areas in and around Thane, as well as enhance comfort and convenience."

State Leaders Appreciate

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde conveyed his gratitude to the central government for supporting the project. On X, he extended his thanks to PM Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri, and former MoHUA Minister Manohar Lal Khattar for their backing.

He added, "The Thane metro will largely improve connectivity within the city. We have done extensive follow-up with the Centre to get the project approved."

Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also welcomed the news, describing it as "tremendous news for Maharashtra" and expressing his appreciation to PM Modi. Fadnavis emphasized that the Rs 12,200 crore project would significantly reduce traffic congestion, benefit the environment, and catalyse further development in the region.

Project Overview

The Thane IRMRP will cover a span of 29 kilometres, featuring 22 stations that primarily run along the western side of Thane. Key areas such as Wagle Estate, Ghodbunder, Kolshet, and Saket will be connected to both the old and new Thane railway stations, allowing commuters to travel between these locations within an hour. The project design includes 26 kilometres of elevated track, with the remaining portion underground, notably at the new and old Thane railway stations.

Scheduled for completion by 2029, the project aims to address the commuting challenges faced by Thane residents by linking the city with Mumbai and Kalyan through the ongoing metro lines 4 and 5.

The metro will feature 6-coach trains, each with a capacity of 1,500 passengers, operating every 15 minutes in both directions. The entire loop is expected to be completed within an hour, with daily ridership projected to reach 8.72 lakh passengers by 2045.

Funding And Environmental Impact

The Rs 12,200 crore project will receive joint funding from the state and central governments, supplemented by revenue generated through the sale of station names, corporate access rights, asset monetization, and value-capture financing.

The central government has also highlighted the project's potential environmental benefits, including a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to a cleaner environment.

In a statement, the MMRCL announced that preparations for floating the tenders would begin promptly. The Thane IRMRP is expected to provide a faster, more economical transport option for millions of daily commuters, particularly those residing in distant parts of the city. The route will also connect major business hubs, offering an efficient transport solution for employees.
