Dharavi Resettlement Plan Expands To Saltpan Lands: Could This Trigger A Flood Crisis?

Mumbai's recent decision to approve the development of 255.9 acres of saltpan land in the eastern suburbs for Dharavi resettlement has sparked concerns among environmentalists and town planners, as reported by mid-day. This move, aimed at addressing the city's housing needs, has raised alarms over its potential impact on Mumbai's fragile ecosystem.

Shweta Wagh, a town planner, voiced her opposition to the government's plan, stressing the ecological importance of these salt pan areas. "Saltpan land parcels are essentially wetlands. They serve as eco-sensitive zones that help naturally mitigate floods. Concreting these areas will increase the likelihood of flooding in the city," Wagh explained in mid-day.

Anand Pendharkar, an ecologist and CEO of SPROUTS, echoed these concerns. He pointed out that the decision could have devastating consequences for Mumbai's eastern coastal region, which plays a crucial role in maintaining the city's ecological balance. "The development will not only destroy the eastern coastal area but will also be disastrous for Mumbai's ecology. A large number of migratory birds visit these biodiverse areas," Pendharkar said in mid-day.

Environmental experts argue that wetlands like saltpans act as natural barriers against flooding by absorbing excess water during heavy rains. Their destruction could leave Mumbai more vulnerable to severe flooding, particularly in a city already prone to heavy monsoons.

Despite the government's intention to use the land for slum rehabilitation, critics believe alternative solutions should be explored. They stress the importance of balancing urban development with environmental preservation to avoid long-term ecological damage. The discussion surrounding the use of saltpan land is likely to continue as both sides present their arguments regarding the future of Mumbai's urban landscape and its environmental impact.
