Devendra Fadnavis Faces Backlash Over 'Vote Jihad' And 'Love Jihad' Claims: Opposition Demands Apology
Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, has ignited a political controversy with his recent remarks regarding 'vote jihad' and 'love jihad' in connection with the Lok Sabha Elections 2024, as reported by mint. Speaking at a public event in Kolhapur, Fadnavis claimed that 'vote jihad' was evident in 14 out of the 48 constituencies in Maharashtra during the recent elections.
Fadnavis, who is also the Maharashtra Home Minister, directed his criticism towards the opposition coalition, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). He alleged that many women were deceived into inter-faith marriages and then abandoned after having children. "A decade ago, we thought the talk of love jihad was just an isolated incident. Now, we have over one lakh complaints where Hindu women have been lured into marriage by men of different faiths," he stated.
The term 'love jihad' is informally used by certain Hindu groups to suggest a supposed campaign by Muslim men to convert Hindu women through deceitful means. However, there are no official records to support the existence of such a campaign. Fadnavis clarified that he is not against inter-faith marriages but expressed concerns about the alleged exploitation of Hindu women.
In addition to discussing 'love jihad', Fadnavis introduced the concept of 'vote jihad,' referencing the Dhule Lok Sabha constituency where the MVA candidate won largely due to a significant turnout in the Malegaon Central assembly segment against the BJP nominee. In the Lok Sabha Elections 2024, the opposition MVA secured 30 out of Maharashtra's 48 seats, while the ruling Mahayuti, part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), managed to win only 17 seats, with the BJP taking 9 of those.
Fadnavis further commented, "Out of the 48 Lok Sabha constituencies in Maharashtra, 14 saw evidence of vote jihad. The Hindu religion has always respected other faiths; tolerance is in our blood. It is essential to awaken Hindutva if voters are electing anti-Hindu leaders." He explained that in the Dhule constituency, the BJP candidate had initially led with 190,000 votes in five assembly seats but lost by a narrow margin of 4,000 votes, largely due to the voting patterns in the Malegaon Central assembly segment.
Fadnavis' statements were met with strong backlash from the Congress party, which accused him of violating the principles of equality laid out in the Constitution. Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole demanded an apology from Fadnavis, asserting, "It is disheartening for Maharashtra to have its Home Minister make statements about love jihad and vote jihad. If such incidents are occurring, why is he not taking action?"
Patole also reminded Fadnavis of Maharashtra's rich history, stating, "Devendra Fadnavis is weak in history. There were Muslim warriors in Shivaji Maharaj's army. He should apologise."
Vijay Wadettiwar, the Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly, suggested that Fadnavis' comments were politically motivated, stating, "The BJP only discusses jihad, mosques, Hindu-Muslim relations, and Bharat-Pakistan. If they do not use these terms, their candidates will struggle to win elections."
This controversy arises as Maharashtra approaches its assembly elections scheduled for November. The elections are expected to see a competitive contest between the MVA coalition, comprising the Shiv Sena (UBT), the NCP led by Sharad Pawar, and the Congress, against the Mahayuti Alliance, which includes the BJP, Shiv Sena-Eknath Shinde, and the NCP-Ajit Pawar.
