Delhi-Mumbai Expressway Update: 80-Km Stretch Opens, Cutting Travel Time By 40 Minutes

On Monday, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) celebrated the opening of a new 80 kilometres stretch of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, as reported by Dainik Bhaskar This section, extending from Gopalpura to Laban and traversing through Kota and Bundi, significantly reduces travel time for commuters. Previously, reaching Laban from Gopalpura required a 100-kilometre journey, typically taking one hour and 30 minutes. With this new stretch operational, the distance is cut down by 20 kilometres, and travel time is slashed by 40 minutes, enabling people to cover the route in just 50 minutes.

The opening of this section is a step forward in making travel between Delhi and Mumbai faster and more efficient. Prior to this, traffic was already flowing from Chechat to Mumbai on the expressway. This development now opens up the route towards Delhi as well. However, those wishing to travel directly from Kota to Delhi might need to wait approximately two more months. This delay is due to ongoing roadwork in package number 10 between Laban and Sawai Madhopur, where tasks such as lining, repairing, barricading, and finishing are pending on the segment between Mui and Hardevganj.

Once the remaining 28-kilometre stretch is completed, the journey from Kota to Delhi, which currently takes seven hours and 30 minutes, will be dramatically reduced to just five hours. This considerable decrease in travel time is seen as a major benefit to Kota, marking a significant development on the first anniversary of the Rajasthan government. Nonetheless, motorists planning to use this expressway will have to make additional preparations for their journey, particularly concerning fuel. The expressway is yet to be furnished with petrol pumps and other essential facilities, necessitating drivers to ensure they have adequate fuel and other necessities for their trip.

In the near future, rest areas constructed every 100 kilometres along the expressway will offer comprehensive facilities, including petrol and diesel pumps, gas stations, and charging stations for electric vehicles. Meanwhile, another noteworthy project under the Bharatmala initiative is the construction of the largest 8-lane tunnel between Kota and Dara. Spanning 4.9 kilometres with eight lanes, this tunnel is a monumental engineering feat, with 70 per cent of its 3500 meters already completed. However, 200 meters on each side of the tunnel are still pending excavation, and the project's completion is anticipated by October of the next year.

The tunnel's construction presents unique challenges, particularly as it passes beneath a large natural drain, making it a high-risk zone and slowing down progress. Until the tunnel is completed, vehicles, especially those transporting flammable materials, are being diverted through a bypass. The completion of both the new expressway stretch and the tunnel promises to significantly enhance connectivity and reduce travel times between major cities, contributing to the overall development and ease of transportation in the region.
