Crossing Turbhe Railway Station Safely: New 4-Lane Flyover To Ease Daily Struggles

After nearly ten years of public demand and protests, a long-awaited flyover will finally be built opposite Turbhe railway station on Thane-Belapur Road, as per a Hindustan Times report. This comes after several accidents at the spot, with at least 20 people losing their lives in the last decade.

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has confirmed that work on the flyover will begin in the next three to four days. According to city engineer Shirish Aradwad, the flyover should be completed within a year, excluding the monsoon season.

The flyover will be 506 metres long and 17 metres wide, costing Rs 41 crore. It will have four lanes for vehicles and a pedestrian crossing below for safe foot traffic. It will start near the IKEA store and end near the Arihant Aura building.

The area around Turbhe station sees heavy movement throughout the day. On the eastern side of the road is a large industrial area with many residents and workers, while the western side has the railway station, markets and the nodal city area. Turbhe Store, one of Navi Mumbai's largest slum areas, is also located nearby.

Due to heavy traffic on the six-lane road, crossing the area has become risky. The first major demand for a flyover came in November 2015 after a tragic accident involving a woman and her young son, who were hit by a container truck while crossing to reach the station. Since then, residents have organised road blockades and signed petitions.

The final design of the flyover takes into account current traffic and future needs, especially with the upcoming Navi Mumbai airport. The flyover will also be lit from below and ensure safe pedestrian movement.
