Congress Spokesperson Alok Sharma Under Fire For Derogatory Remark On Marathi People

A raging controversy has engulfed Maharashtra, with Congress spokesperson Alok Sharma facing widespread criticism for his derogatory remark about Marathi people. During a debate on Aajtak, Sharma made a shocking comment, linking the Marathi community to rapists.

During a debate on Aajtak, Sharma responded to a question about the Badlapur sex abuse case by asking his BJP counterpart whether his party would protect "Marathi manoos (people)" if they were involved in such crimes. He questioned, "मराठी माणसू बदलापरू मेरेप करेगा तोह उसको भी आप बचाएंगेकया" (Even if a Marathi person committed the rape in Badlapur, would you still save him?).

Alok Sharma

The remark has triggered a wave of outrage across Maharashtra, with thousands of posts and posters denouncing Sharma's comment. Marathi lovers, history enthusiasts, and social media users have all voiced their discontent. The BJP and Shiv Sena have condemned Sharma's actions in strong terms, with Union Minister Piyush Goyal demanding clarification from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

Shiv Sena has filed a police complaint against Sharma, accusing him of insulting Marathi people and demanding his dismissal. A case has been registered, and there is significant anger among Marathi speakers worldwide regarding Sharma's statement.

Thousands of posts condemning Alok Sharma have surfaced on social media. Posters denouncing Alok Sharma have been put up in various places. The BJP and Shiv Sena have strongly condemned Alok Sharma's actions in harsh terms. Union Minister Piyush Goyal has demanded a clarification from Rahul Gandhi.

Shiv Sena has filed a police complaint against Alok Sharma for insulting Marathi people by labeling them as rapists. They have also demanded Sharma's dismissal. A case has been registered against Sharma, and there is intense anger among Marathi speakers worldwide regarding his statement.

The outrage against Sharma's statement extends beyond party lines and cities, reflecting a broad disapproval across Maharashtra. The common sentiment is that a person who commits violence against women does not represent any language, religion, or caste but is simply a rapist. By linking such an act with the Marathi community, Sharma has committed a serious offense, according to the Marathi community.

Maharashtra's Glorious Tradition of Respecting Women

Maharashtra boasts a proud tradition of respecting women, dating back to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who took severe measures to ensure the safety and dignity of women. The state has also been home to pioneering figures like Pandita Ramabai, Dr. Anandibai Gopalrao Joshi, and Savitribai Phule, who advanced women's education and empowerment. The first school for girls was established in Maharashtra, and Marathi women have made significant strides in various fields, including education, science, and the arts.

Given this heritage, the labeling of Marathi people as rapists is deeply troubling. This remark has not only insulted Marathi people but also undermines the state's long-standing commitment to women's respect and equality.

Congress' Historical Disdain for Maharashtra

The Congress party has been accused of treating Marathi people and Maharashtra with disdain since independence. This sentiment is seen as part of a longstanding pattern of undermining Marathi aspirations and leadership.

This sentiment reflects past actions, such as the Congress's opposition to the creation of a united Maharashtra and its efforts to undermine prominent Marathi leaders like Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. The party has consistently ensured that no Marathi person gains significant prominence at the national level and has worked to prevent Maharashtra from receiving its due share of recognition and resources.

Accusations of Historical Injustice

The Congress has been accused of unfairly annexing Marathi-speaking regions ( Belgaum, Bidar, Bhalki, Karwar, Nipani, and Khanapur) to Karnataka during the linguistic reorganization of states. Marathi speakers in border areas have long felt that they were unjustly treated and that their calls for inclusion in Maharashtra have not been addressed. This historical injustice is seen as part of a broader pattern of neglect and discrimination against Marathi-speaking regions.

There has been a notable absence of Marathi leaders in the top echelons of the Congress party. Since independence, the party has never appointed a Marathi person as its president and has systematically weakened influential Marathi leaders. This exclusion has led to a perception that the Congress party has always undermined the aspirations of Marathi leaders and people.

Uddhav Thackeray, Sanjay Raut Remain Conveniently Silent

Former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray is the son of Balasaheb Thackeray, who always championed Marathi pride and supported Marathi speakers. He defended Marathi speakers and ensured justice for them.

Balasaheb would have torn apart anyone who spoke against the Marathi language, Maharashtra, or Marathi speakers.

Although Alok Sharma directly called Marathi speakers rapists on a national channel, Uddhav Thackeray and Sanjay Raut, who claim to be the heirs of Balasaheb's legacy, have remained silent.

Congress leaders in Maharashtra have not condemned Alok Sharma with even a word. Leaders like Sharad Pawar, Supriya Sule, Rohit Pawar, and Jitendra Awhad have also maintained convenient silence on this issue. The question now arises as to why they are silent.
