BMC Implements Strict Rules To Tackle Construction Pollution In Mumbai: Here's What You Need To Know
Following the conclusion of elections, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has shifted its focus towards controlling the growing pollution in the city, particularly from construction activities, according to Lokmat. More than 5,000 construction sites have been issued warnings.
Ward officials are now inspecting these sites to ensure developers comply with the BMC's 28 guidelines. Developers found violating these rules will face a 'show cause' notice, and failure to comply within the given timeframe may result in the site being sealed and work being halted.

The move comes as pollution levels in Mumbai have continued to rise, with the quality of air significantly deteriorating. Dust from construction sites is identified as a major contributor to this problem. To combat this, the municipality has mandated measures to control dust pollution. Last October, new regulations were introduced, including a ban on burning stoves and open fires for cooking food at construction sites.
In addition to these steps, municipal staff, who were previously engaged in election duties, are now returning to their roles, accelerating the enforcement of these measures.
Air Purifiers Installed
To address the pollution caused by high vehicle volumes at major junctions, the municipality has installed air purifiers at five strategic locations: Dahisar Check Naka, BKC, Jogeshwari Link Road, Chheda Nagar Chembur, and Mulund West Check Naka. These purifiers absorb dust and release clean air. The municipality has plans to expand this initiative, with more purifiers set to be installed at five additional locations soon.
Construction Site Regulations
The BMC has set clear regulations for construction sites to curb pollution. For sites covering one acre or more, there must be a minimum of 35 feet of space around the perimeter, while smaller sites require at least 25 feet of space. Additionally, a sprinkler system must be in place, spraying water four to five times a day to prevent dust from spreading. CCTV cameras are also mandatory at all construction sites to ensure compliance with these rules.
